Summary: This is a Lord's Supper Meditation.

As we come to the Lord’s table, we are to be reminded of what Jesus did for us just before He was arrested. He initiated the first Lord’s Supper. It was a solemn moment. All His disciples were gathered in an upper room. Jesus knew that we would need to be reminded of what He went through for us.

So, taking the Lord’s Supper is one of the ordinances of the church. It is not a sacrament, meaning there is no saving power in taking the bread that symbolizes Jesus’ body or drinking the juice which is symbolic of His blood that He shed for us. So, don’t think that taking the Lord’s Supper will get you to heaven because it won’t.

What WILL get you to heaven is believing in Jesus as the Son of God and accepting Him as your Savior.

Jesus didn’t say how often we should take the Lord’s Supper. Some churches take it each time they meet. Some take it once a month. That is not what matters. What matters is that we hear what Jesus told us when He said, “As oft as you take this bread and drink this cup, do it in remembrance of Me.”

So today, we set aside a time when we reflect on Jesus’ sacrifice so that our sins may be forgiven, giving us the opportunity to accept God’s gift of salvation.

Our deacons have prepared the table and we are ready to begin this ordinance in Jesus’ Name. As the plate comes by you, you will see two cups stacked together, one holding the bread and the top cup holding the juice. Make sure to take a set of the two cups as it is passed.

Pass the elements.

I read from the Gospel of Matthew chapter 26:26

“As they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, (have a deacon ask the blessing) gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take and eat it; this is my body.” (Matthew 26:26)

Take the bread.

“Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, (have a deacon ask the blessing) he gave it to them and said, “Drink from it, all of you. (Matthew 26:27)

“ For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 But I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” (Matthew 26:28-29)
