This nation is at the edge of the cliff. All it will take is one more step to go over, regulating America to the dustbin of history. For over sixty years since prayer and Bible reading were removed from the public schools by a poor interpretation of the First Amendment by a liberal Supreme Court and a zealous atheist, this country has gone from what had been referred to as a "Shining city on a hill", to where we are satisfied with a broken conscience on a dunghill. My generation, born at the start of the turbulent 1960's, watched college students across the nation burn draft cards, sing protest songs, call the police every name in the book, and endure cries from leftists who had read and digested Saul Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals", along with the bilge of Marxism to overthrow and burn everything to the ground. Well, there really is nothing new under the sun in 2025 (Ecclesiastes 1:9-11). The same thing is happening with young people today who believe that it is a crime to think for oneself. Everything we faced a generation ago is nothing novel, new, or unique.
Godlessness has escalated to heights I knew were predicted in the Scriptures (Matthew 24; Mark 13, Luke 21; 2 Timothy 3:1-8; 2 Peter 3), but I did not expect them to arrive this quickly. I have lived long enough to see men and women gleefully going to abortion mills, cursing and mocking at pastors and Christians begging them to reconsider their decision to kill their unborn child. I saw the signs at "women's rallies" such as, "If Mary had gotten an abortion, we wouldn't be in this mess.". I have heard blasphemies uttered by skeptics who claim that God "raped" Mary and forced her to carry Jesus in her womb. I have heard "comedy routines" of pathetic late-night hosts gleefully applauding “guests" on their programs who ridicule the name of Jesus, the Gospel, and the existence of God. I look with a mix of disgust and sorrow at so-called "Christian" programming featuring the smiling “Colgate Boy” preachers who do everything EXCEPT open the Bible and preach the message of salvation through Jesus Christ alone (John 14:6; Acts 4:12; Romans 6:23, 10:9-10, 13; Hebrews 7:25; 1 John 2:1). Instead, they choose to flaunt the false “prosperity gospel “ with its false emphasis on wealth and status, while faithful Bible believing pastors worldwide face increased persecution and in some cases martyrdom for the Lord Jesus Christ. I weep for the real men of God (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15; 1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:9-11; 1 Peter 5:1-6) who stand behind pulpits worldwide, preaching the Gospel to smaller and increasingly indifferent congregations who believe that the silly games on their cell phones and tablets are more worthy of attention than the state of their eternal souls.
This type of vacillation between choosing God or the devil was rife in the northern kingdom of ancient Israel under godless king Ahab and his demonic wife Jezebel. Together they established the worship of the fertility deity Baal upon the land along with the horrid practices that came with it, including child sacrifice and bloodshed. The prophets of God who had stood against this evil were being hunted down and executed by the fanatical Jezebel, her priests, and the army of Israel. This spiritual poison was spreading unchecked. Ahab and Jezebel believed that they could get away with it, eliminating anyone who stood in the way. It was at this dark time in Israel’s history that God's prophet, Elijah, appeared from nowhere (1 Kings 17:1), and proclaimed that no rain would fall on the land according to the Word of the Lord. Rest assured God never allows evil to have the upper hand. If you read the end of the Bible, you’ll see that He wins. Period.
Three and a half years of drought brought the kingdom to a standstill, yet the people had not budged. They fluctuated on whether or not to follow God, who would bring the rain if they would just repent, or continue to stay thirsty, and wonder why Baal had not taken action. Someone would have figured then, just as someone would hopefully do today, that our troubles and situation would dissipate if we quit putting ourselves on a pedestal, swallow our pride, repent of our sins, and seek the face of God for more than a few moments each Sunday. Instead, we should plead with Him to have mercy on us and the nation. I do not see this in Scripture as far as Israel was concerned. It was time for Elijah to call the people together at the altars of Ba'al along with the altar he had built for the LORD to settle things once and for all. The time had come. There would be no more indifference, no wishy-washy worship, no playing sides, no more corporate silence, and no more allowing wicked rulers to arrogantly believe they had everything under their demonic control. No more of this nonsense. Elijah had called out Ahab for his wickedness (1 Kings 18:17-19), fearlessly, boldly, and without apology (would that more preachers in America do the same and not worry about what others think or say).
Elijah confronted the Israelites with a blunt question that could not be ignored. It is the same question for America. HOW LONG ARE YOU GOING TO FALTER BETWEEN TWO OPINIONS? IF THE LORD IS GOD, THEN FOLLOW HIM, BUT IF BAAL, FOLLOW HIM!" The people said nothing. The sting of Elijah's question penetrated their souls, silently asking themselves why they had allowed this wickedness to fester? Why did they not support the prophets of the Lord who had stood up to Jezebel and other wicked rulers? Why didn't they say anything when they heard the screams of babies and little children being thrown onto the burning arms of the Ba'al and Moloch statues as a sacrifice to these demons? Why did they not stand against Jeroboam (1Kings 13), who had led Israel into idolatry with the golden calves, turning away from the living God? Why did they let things progress to this point, choosing to remain complacent with their possessions? Why did they not demand that the Word of God be the kingdom’s foundation? Blood flowed, voices were silenced, deeds gone undone, and now they faced a man of God who demanded an accounting for their lethargy, evil deeds, thoughts, and lack of outrage. In 1 Kings 18, we read that the LORD answered Elijah's prayer in a mighty way. He ordered the execution of the priests of Ba'al, then rain came to the land. Ahab and Jezebel would eventually meet with horrific deaths and they both ended up in hell. The late Dr. Robert G. Lee (1886-1978) said in his famous sermon, "Pay-Day Someday", written nearly a hundred years ago, there is an approaching "pay-day" for all of us. We will be held accountable for what we have done in this life before Almighty God with no exceptions (2 Corinthians 5:10; Hebrews 9:27, 10:31; Revelation 20:11-15).
America, Elijah asks you the same question. Make up your minds! Either follow the false gods of fame, wealth, materialism, or the demons of hell and their false promises that will end in eternal torment for you and them ( Matthew 25:41). Either continue to stay non-committed and keep your social media "friends" content, remain a coward, and keep your standards and conviction buried, or decide NOW to throw the world's garbage, hostility, ridicule, and hatred of all things away and surrender your lives to Jesus Christ without delay, apology, or excuse. No more "fence-sitting", America, especially when it comes to telling others about the salvation, mercy, grace, and eternal life found only in Jesus Christ. I hope that the LORD has used the events of these past few years to wake you from slumber and get serious about your faith. If you claim to be a child of God in Christ, then quit hiding it, quit being willy-nilly, quit being afraid of other's opinions, and speak up! Either you believe in Jesus, or you don't. Either you believe that the Scriptures are true, or you don't. Either you believe in heaven and hell, or you don't. Either you believe in the Gospel, or you don't. The time has come to tear down the altars of Ba'al in this country, fearlessly proclaim the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, get busy for the Kingdom, trust in the LORD and be ready to meet Him knowing that when the time comes for this country to be judged and cast into oblivion, you did not stand still and allow souls to enter into eternal darkness, but instead proclaimed the life-changing message of the Lord Jesus Christ, forever the great King of Kings, and the One who will makes all things new. Amen.
