The Gospel is Good News
Romans 5:6-9
Intro.
The word “Gospel” means “good news”
Paul clearly defines the Gospel for us. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
Vs. 3 Christ died for our sins
Vs. 4 And that he was buried
Vs. 4. He rose again the third day
According to the Scriptures.
They had believed it. Vs. 1
Received it and stand on it
There are many who try to change the Gospel
By limiting it
– only certain nationalities
-- only certain races
-- only certain people (chosen by God)
By adding to it.
-- Works (keeping the ten commandments, obeying the
golden rule etc.
-- Baptism
-- Other church additions
- Lord’s supper
- Church membership
By taking away from it.
-- No resurrection
-- No atonement ( his death meant nothing)
Paul warned against changing the Gospel in any way. Gal. 1:7-9
The Gospel is Good news
I. It demonstrates God’s love for us.
Rom. 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
A. The Gospel always begins with God’s love for us.
B. Have you ever noticed the words of extreme used in telling
us of God’s love for us.
1. His love beyond any limits.
John 3:16 For God SO loved the world.
- to the point where there is NO MORE
2. His love is beyond any definition.
1John 3:1 ¶ Behold, what manner of love the Father
hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the
sons of God:
3. His love is beyond our comprehension.
Jer. 31:3 The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.
C. Aren’t you glad that in spite of our sin and rebellion against
God, He still loves us.
D. Can you imagine if He hated us?
The Gospel is good news because it demonstrates God’s love for us.
II. It deletes my debt
A. What debt?
1. The debt of my sin
2. The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23)
Rom. 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the
world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men,
for that all have sinned:
B. By his death, Jesus paid my debt for me.
Rom. 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in
that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
1. For us means he died in our place.
2. 1Th. 5:9-10 For God hath not appointed us to wrath,
but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep,
we should live together with him.
3. It was paid in blood (Romans 5:9)
Eph. 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood,
the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
The Gospel is good news because it deletes my debt.
III. It determines my destiny
Rom. 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Rom. 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
A. We shall be saved!
B. Means we will have eternal life in heaven with Him.
C. There are only two possibilities, Heaven or Hell.
1John 2:25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.
John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
D. That everlasting live will be a place called Heaven.
John 14:1-3 Ye believe in God, believe also in me…
The Gospel is good news because it determines my destiny. – A place called Heaven.
Conclusion:
Mark 1:15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. – It’s good news
