The Basic Teachings Of Jesus—He’s Enough.
John 14:23-27NIV
Evangelist Tommy Tenney once stated—“The gospel of Jesus Christ is a practical gospel that is as concerned with doing something as it is with being something. Good works won’t get you into heaven, but once you receive new life from Jesus, he expects you to do what he did for the rest of your life. It comes with the territory. Godly people do godly things or they aren’t godly.”
Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.
25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
Again take note of John 14:23, As you love, and take delight in God’s word, Jesus stated, His Father will love you, and come and make His home within.
Think about it—As a child of God you obtain the privilege to house the Holy Spirit of God. The third member of the Trinity.
We all have influences in our lives; some of those influences are deeply embedded in us, while others we have rejected.
However the fact is, we are all a product of multiple influences. Many folk are controlled by bad influences such as addictions and other bad habits.
That why the Apostles Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20NIV Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
Jesus breaks it down and makes it simple. If your mine be fruitful—24-7.
Paul uses the word, ‘temples of the Holy Spirit.’
The word ‘temples’ was not the word used for the outer rooms, but in the Greek language ‘naos’ referred to the inner sanctum, the place where there was a visible manifestation of the ‘Shekinah’ glory of God.
Remember this fact—The indwelling of God through the Holy Spirit makes Christians different from any other religion on earth. Why? Because no other religions claim that ‘their god inhabits their followers.
Once more, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20TM Or didn’t you realize that your body is a sacred place, the place of the Holy Spirit? Don’t you see that you can’t live however you please, squandering what God paid such a high price for? The physical part of you is not some piece of property belonging to the spiritual part of you. God owns the whole works. So let people see God in and through your body.
Back to the text—John 14:24 Jesus goes on and states—“Anyone who doesn’t love Me, won’t abide by my teachings. Moreover, Jesus states, “These words come from My Father.”
Once more going back to the text—John 14:25-26AMP “I have told you these things while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you.
Jesus didn’t stop there, verse 27 records, that Jesus proceeds to tell His disciples that He was going to leave them, but His Shalom—peace shall abide with them.
Paul writes in Philippians 4:7AMP And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours].
This morning I want to give you some basic teachings of Jesus; These teachings should become every Christians foundation.
1. The Christian life is marked by baptism—
Matt. 3:13-17.
Jesus had a need, This need was to fulfill all righteousness from His Father. John reluctantly baptized Jesus.
What occurred afterwards? The heavens were opened.
2. God is available to help us not give in to temptation (Matt. 4:1-11).
Shortly after Jesus’ baptism, Jesus was lead by the Spirit into the wilderness, there, He fasted for 40 days and nights, during that time, satan came to tempt Jesus.
In what ways was Jesus tempted? The book of 1 John, gives us the three areas Jesus was tempted in.
* The lust of the flesh.
* The lust of the eye.
* The pride of life.
Say—“it is written!”
This I know, “As believers speak God’s word over themselves, as well as over others, special manifestations of God will occur.” P.H
Acts 10:38…How God anointed Jesus Christ of Nazareth who went about doing good, healing all who were possessed of the devil for God was with Him.
3. Jesus asks us to repent—turn away from wrong, confess wrongdoing (Matt. 4:17).
Your confession will only grow and develop as you say it. It’s important that we confess our sins to God.
“Don’t be afraid to say I’ve sinned.’ ‘A truthful testimony goes with us into eternity.” P.H
4. Jesus says, “Follow me” and you will help find other followers (Matt. 4:18-22).
Become a fisher of men! Remember, The rewards for following Jesus are out of this world!
5. Jesus says, “Take up your cross and follow me”(Matt. 16:24-27).
Lay your agenda aside and take up your cross and follow Him. The Lord spoke this simple word. There are so many people trying to take up someone else’s cross. No, take up your cross!
6. Repeatedly Jesus notes, “The kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Jesus seems to be telling us ways to experience heaven on earth now, and he also refers to a future realm where we will be in the presence of God and Jesus. (Matt. 4:23; 13:18-52; 18:1-5).
7. Jesus showed compassion for all and helped them: The poor, the despised, the outcasts, and He wants us to do the same Matt. 4:24-25;9:9-13.
"Don’t be afraid to show compassion.” P.H
8. Jesus says he is like “new wineskins” or a completely new thing (Matt. 9:14-17).
The many healings of Jesus teach us, “Have faith; faith is enough.”
9. Jesus emphasizes, “Be sincere, not a hypocrite”
Matthew 6:1-6, Jesus teaches for His followers to give, do and be always with the right motive.
10. Jesus and God are one Matt. 10:40; 16:13-20.
How do I explain the Trinity? God is so Mighty, He shows Himself as Creator, However, God is so Mighty that He shows Himself as Jesus. Our willing sacrifice. Moreover, God is so Mighty that He displays Himself through the Holy Spirit actively living and abiding through us.
11. Jesus warns, “Don’t let family get in the way of following me” Matt. 10:35-38; 12:46-50).
Say this, “Jesus first.”
12. Jesus has authority over the law and tradition Matthew 12:1-8NLT
13. Jesus fulfills Old Testament scriptures (Matt. 1:22-23; 17:9-13).
14. Jesus preaches, “Love your enemies; do not hate, be reconciled” (Matt. 5:38-48; 5:21-24).
15. Jesus reminds us, “You must become like a child to enter the kingdom.”
Matthew 19:13-15NLT One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could lay his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering him. 14 But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” 15 And he placed his hands on their heads and blessed them before he left.
16. Jesus’ disciples become a community of faith, which forms the beginnings of the Christian church universal (Matt. 28:16-19).
The events of Jesus’ last week on earth are the culmination of his ministry and teachings, climaxing with his death on the cross. A man who has never sinned dies to save all the rest of us who have sinned
Jesus says, “I am alive! Go and tell everyone else” Matt. 28:7-10.
17. He adds, “I will be with you forever” (Matt. 28:20b).
Matthew 5:1-12NLT One day as he saw the crowds gathering, Jesus went up on the mountainside and sat down. His disciples gathered around him, 2 and he began to teach them. 3 “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. 4 God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth. 6 God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied. 7 God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God. 9 God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God. 10 God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. 11 “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. 12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.
