Thesis: In 2020 we are looking for a Breakthrough in our lives – a breakthrough from Covid 19, from divisive politics, from societal division and dissension in our society – but to get the desired breakthrough in our lives we need to have 20 – 20 vision into the spiritual realm and see through God’s eyes.

Scripture Texts:

2 Corinthians 10:3-4: “For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.”

Introduction:

This morning, I want us to continue to talk about spiritual breakthroughs. But more importantly about having a spiritual breakthrough personally and the process that seems to connect with getting them. We need to push forward in 2020 with the foresight that a breakthrough is possible – that a miracle is possible - we need to see things through the eyes of faith and not fear – through the eyes of God and not man – through the eyes of a biblical world view not a secular world view - I believe we need to give over our negative thoughts and mindsets to the Lord which I believe leads to breakdowns. But to see a breakthrough is possible we must observe the patterns of breakthrough.

Putty Putman stated, “Understanding that life happens in the midst of this invisible spiritual battle helps us make sense of our lives. Each of us has places in our lives where God’s rule has been realized, and we have other places where it has not yet been realized…Some days we will see glorious breakthroughs. Some days we will get to be the very hands and voice of God. We will see God’s rule established and the enemy’s rule overthrown. It is a glorious and beautiful thing. Other days, we may not win the battle. We will give it our all and advance the cause the best way we know how, but we may not see God’s kingdom come the way we expect. We will not win every battle, but in time we will win the war. This perspective is vital because it gives us a means to process situations in which we do not see the kingdom breaking through.”

Scripture:

Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Psalm 91:1-16: Security of the One Who Trusts in the Lord.

1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!”

3 For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper, And from the deadly pestilence.

4 He will cover you with His pinions (wing of God), And under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.

5 You will not be afraid of the terror by night, or of the arrow that flies by day;

6 Of the pestilence that stalks in darkness, or of the destruction that lays waste at noon.

7 A thousand may fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, But it shall not approach you.

8 You will only look on with your eyes, and see the recompense of the wicked.

9 For you have made the LORD, my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place.

10 No evil will befall you, nor will any plague come near your tent.

11 For He will give His angels charge concerning you, to guard you in all your ways.

12 They will bear you up in their hands, that you do not strike your foot against a stone.

13 You will tread upon the lion and cobra, the young lion and the serpent you will trample down.

14 “Because he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name.

15 “He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.

16 “With a long life I will satisfy him and let him see My salvation.”

Here are 3 insights of a breakthrough from God – there is usually a pattern connected with a spiritual breakthrough. We see this just looking at the history of Israel, looking into church history and even into the History of the United States.

Note following thoughts from Praying for a Christ Awakening pages 15-18.

Historically in the OT the pattern looks like this:

God sends a leader and reveals himself to his people and they have a spiritual awakening. But it does not last because the people after about a generation distance themselves from God and His ways. This usually happens when the leader dies! So the people start to fall - to drift away from God. Yes, they distance themselves from the Word of God and worship of God. They forget what God had done for them! They begin to accept idolatry from the secular culture around them. Pagan practices are embraced such as sexual immorality, greed, pride in their sin, sinful lifestyles abound as normal, division rises up and wars and slavery invade. Typically in this crisis moment a remnant of people begin to pray for a spiritual breakthrough and ask God to save them. In the midst of their darkest hour God sends a spiritual breakthrough or awakening.

In the New Testament you see a group of people who were born in a time of spiritual awakening but it does not last. They drift from God and eventually walk away from God and the decline comes. The disciples pass away and people start to drift!

Throughout Church history you see the same pattern of spiritual awakening and the decline. We see it with the Catholic Church, Lutheran Church Martin Luther, John Wesley the Methodist church, with the founding of Yale, Harvard and Princeton as Christian colleges.

Throughout world history and in many countries there are periodic times of spiritual awakening then over time the spiritual decline sets into the new generation and the next.

In the history of United States we have experienced three times of national revival, known as Great awakenings. Some promote that we have actually seen 4 Great Awakenings!

The first, from about 1740 to 1742, was led by men such as Jonathan Edwards and George Whitfield. Around fifty thousand people were added to the churches of New England during the First Great Awakening, which was significant for a population of about 300,000 at that time. This movement came before the Revolutionary war.

The Second Great Awakening, from the 1790s to around 1840, was led by many, including Charles Finney. This was during the days of the Wild West, when camp meetings were held in tents with sawdust floors, and itinerant preachers shared the gospel. Thousands and thousands of Americans came to faith during this time. The Abolitionist movement to ban slavery came out of this spiritual awakening.

America’s Third Great Awakening, from 1857 to 1859, had a unique beginning. A forty-eight-year-old businessman named Jeremiah Lanphier began a prayer meeting in New York City. Though small, it exploded after the stock market crashed, and within six months, ten thousand New Yorkers were gathering daily for prayer. Around one million people came to believe in Jesus during the Third Great Awakening. It carried its impact into the 1870’s - The Great Fire of Chicago began about 9 pm Sunday, October 8, until early Tuesday, October 10, 1871. This rapidly spreading fire killed approximately 300 individuals, destroyed roughly 3.3 square miles Chicago, and left over 100,000 residents homeless. This devastating fire would greatly impact the life of American evangelist D.L. Moody. Moody launch’s out to win the lost, many come to Christ, there is a resurgence of Christian education, missions and evangelism. The YMCA plays a role in this great awakening too impacting thousands.

The Fourth Great Awakening and the last one in American history to date. It came in 1970 with a full-blown spiritual awakening. It was called the Jesus Movement which birthed Calvary Chapel (Chuck Smith), Vineyard movement (John Wimber) and a host of others.

Could it ever happen again? Could we have another Jesus Movement? A spiritual breakthrough and awakening? Or, are the best days of America behind us spiritually? Will we end up in civil war and collapse our country? The Epoch News article highlight.

Note these points are taken from and adapted from https://www.fromhispresence.com/when-god-pauses-in-the-middle-of-your-breakthrough/

1. Your spiritual breakthrough will often start after an extreme test of your faith.

a. I can look at the life of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, David, Elijah, Paul, and many heroes of the faith to see this pattern of breakthrough.

i. We have seen this happen with the nation of Israel, we have seen these things happen in church history and even in the history of the United States and other countries.

ii. I believe today we see a testing of America’s faith and trust in God going on!

b. God often allows you to be tested right before your spiritual breakthrough begins or before the spiritual breakthrough comes. James spoke of breakthrough and gives us some insights into spiritual breakthroughs:

i. James 1:1-27: Testing Your Faith

1. 1James, a bond-servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes who are dispersed abroad: Greetings.

2Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials,

3knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

4And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

5But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

6But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.

7For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord,

8being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

9But the brother of humble circumstances is to glory in his high position;

10and the rich man is to glory in his humiliation, because like flowering grass he will pass away.

11For the sun rises with a scorching wind and withers the grass; and its flower falls off and the beauty of its appearance is destroyed; so too the rich man in the midst of his pursuits will fade away.

12Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

13Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.

14But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.

15Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.

16Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.

17Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.

18In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures.

19£This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger;

20for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.

21Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.

22But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.

23For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror;

24for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.

25But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.

a. Dr Tony Evans stated: “Many of us want to simply audit the Christian life as if it were a college course that we sit in on without doing the homework, taking the tests, and being graded. We don’t want to do all the hard work that it requires. But if Christ is truly Lord of our lives, there will be work to show that we are serving Him. There will be evidence that we’re taking the course He’s teaching and that it’s making an impact on our lives. Broken-ness is one of the lessons we must go through in order to gain greater spiritual maturity and in order for Christ to be made known in our lives.”

i. From https://tonyevans.org/two-ways-for-a-spiritual-breakthrough/

ii. I add brokenness always leads to breakthrough – when we humble ourselves through trails and ask for God’s help – looking to Him to bring the miracle or breakthrough he responds – but sometimes – most times we have to press through a situation – pass the test and get the blessings.

iii. I believe this is what needs to happen in our country – right now!

ii. How many here have experienced what James is talking about here? I know I have many times in my Christian walk and ministry. We all face the battles – the trials – the tribulations and yes they are intense – stressful – but I have discovered it’s when I get the testimony – it’s when my faith grows – it’s always a faith stand which I must make - just right before a spiritual breakthrough?

1. Things are moving along, and you're standing in faith, you are praying, believing God for a miracle and you are feeling good. Then, suddenly, all hell seems to be unleashed against you. You suddenly have to battle emotions, jealousy, discouragement, fatigue, hopelessness, stress and other things that you don't usually battle with. You sometimes even question God – saying – “What happened God?” “Life was so good!”

iii. Isaiah 60:1-22:

1. Note: Israel was not looking to the Lord so God warns of judgment but if repentance and confession of sin happen’ s he would restore her as a nation. He would cover her and protect her.

a. Talk about the history of Israel!

2. A Glorified Zion

1 “Arise, shine; for your light has come, And the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.

2 “For behold, darkness will cover the earth, And deep darkness the peoples; But the LORD will rise upon you, And His glory will appear upon you.

3 “Nations will come to your light, And kings to the brightness of your rising.

4 “Lift up your eyes round about and see; They all gather together, they come to you. Your sons will come from afar, And your daughters will be carried in the arms.

5 “Then you will see and be radiant, And your heart will thrill and rejoice; Because the abundance of the sea will be turned to you, The wealth of the nations will come to you.

6 “A multitude of camels will cover you, The young camels of Midian and Ephah; All those from Sheba will come; They will bring gold and frankincense, And will bear good news of the praises of the LORD.

7 “All the flocks of Kedar will be gathered together to you,The rams of Nebaioth will minister to you; They will go up with acceptance on My altar, And I shall glorify My glorious house…

a. This passage is a promise from God to Israel that even though they will go through hard times mostly because of their sin and rejection of Him – God will at one point bring a breakthrough for them and glorify them when they turn their hearts back to Him!

T.S. – Times of extreme testing of our faith can precede a spiritual breakthrough but so does going through a dark night of the soul.

2. Your spiritual breakthrough will often be ignited after a dark night of the soul experience.

a. Have you ever heard the phrase “It’s always darkest before the dawn?”

i. The first person to use this proverb was Thomas Fuller, an English theologian, in the year 1650. It appeared in his work titled A Pisgah-Sight of Palestine and the Confines Thereof.

1. He coined an accurate and true phrase which caught on!

a. Dark nights of the soul are a reality of life in a fallen world!

i. RC Spoul noted this about this spiritual battle:

1. “The dark night of the soul. This phenomenon describes a malady that the greatest of Christians have suffered from time to time. It was the malady that provoked David to soak his pillow with tears. It was the malady that earned for Jeremiah the sobriquet, “The Weeping Prophet.” It was the malady that so afflicted Martin Luther that his melancholy threatened to destroy him. This is no ordinary fit of depression, but it is a depression that is linked to a crisis of faith, a crisis that comes when one senses the absence of God or gives rise to a feeling of abandonment by Him. Spiritual depression is real and can be acute. We ask how a person of faith could experience such spiritual lows, but whatever provokes it does not take away from its reality. Our faith is not a constant action. It is mobile. It vacillates. We move from faith to faith, and in between we may have periods of doubt when we cry, “Lord, I believe, help Thou my unbelief.”

a. https://www.ligonier.org/blog/the-dark-night-of-the-soul/

ii. The idea behind this phrase “It’s always darkest before the dawn” is related to the literal meaning of dawn. Dawn begins when the first light begins to show over the horizon from the sunrise. Therefore, there is the least light before dawn begins, because there is no sunlight at that point. That is also the longest point since last seeing light.”

1. Examples of: It’s Always Darkest Before the Dawn or the night is always darkest before the dawn:

a. Here is an example that involves two college students discussing a series of unfortunate occurrences that one of them has experienced.

i. Robin: You know what? I don’t think I’m going to return to school next year. Harry: Why not? What’s the matter? Robin: I just don’t think I’m smart enough to be successful here. Harry: You’re extremely smart! Why would you think otherwise? Robin: I’m failing most of my classes, the boy I was dating just broke up with me, and I feel sick all of the time. Harry: Remember, it’s always darkest before the dawn. Things always get better when you’re at your lowest point.”

2. The phrase it’s darkest before the dawn means that things always seem the worst right before they improve.

a. I look at the life of Joseph in the Bible! See Genesis 39-45

i. Quote: “The Bible Story of Joseph, from the Book of Genesis, is one of heroic redemption and forgiveness. Joseph was the most loved son of his father, Israel, given the famous robe of many colors. When Joseph reported having dreams of his brothers, and even the stars and moon, bowing before him, their jealousy of Joseph grew into action. The brothers sold him into slavery to a traveling caravan of Ishmaelites who took him to Egypt and sold him to Potiphar, the captain of Pharaoh's guard. In Egypt, the Lord's presence with Joseph enables him to find favor with Potiphar and the keeper of the prison. With God's help, Joseph interprets the dreams of two prisoners, predicting that one of them will be reinstated but the other put to death. Joseph then interprets the dreams of the Pharaoh, which anticipate seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine. Pharaoh recognizes Joseph's God-given ability and prompts his promotion to the chief administrator of Egypt.”

3. Paul reminds us that even when it’s dark and seems painful – we need to remember breakthrough is coming from Jesus - 2 Cor. 4:7-10: 6For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. 7But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; 8we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; 9persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed…”

a. Paul battles dark nights – hardship and persecution but he always knew Jesus would bring him through the dark and into the light – breakthrough was just around the corner!

b. R.C Sproul states, “This passage indicates the limits of depression that we experience. The depression may be profound, but it is not permanent, nor is it fatal. Notice that the apostle Paul describes our condition in a variety of ways. He says that we are “afflicted, perplexed, persecuted, and struck down.” These are powerful images that describe the conflict that Christians must endure, but in every place that he describes this phenomenon, he describes at the same time its limits. Afflicted, but not crushed. Perplexed, but not in despair. Persecuted, but not forsaken. Struck down, but not destroyed.”

i. From https://www.ligonier.org/blog/the-dark-night-of-the-soul/

b. Article from Beliefnet.com: https://www.beliefnet.com/inspiration/5-keys-to-spiritual-breakthrough.aspx

i. We need to know that every situation is temporary – knowing this should help us know that a breakthrough is coming – we need to not give up hope for a breakthrough.

1. “Regardless of the circumstances we face and the hand that we are dealt, we should know that they will soon pass. Knowing this can help us achieve spiritual breakthrough.”

a. Dave Oberg here at Christian Hills Church always told me about struggles, trials and hardship, “This too will pass!”

i. He was always right – what seems like a dark night right now passes as the sun comes up – he said this to me at 95 and said it was always true in his life and in the life of Christian Hills Church.

2. Leslie states, “When someone says this, it is usually in the context of a painful or otherwise unpleasant situation that is happening at the time. The phrase means that the situation is only temporary. It is a great phrase to remember when it comes to any circumstance you’re facing.”

a. The truth is season come and go and so does “Dark nights” – it’s true I can say from experience.

3. Leslie adds, “While seasons come, they will also pass and things are bound to get better eventually. In our times of joy and in the darkest hours of pain, God’s love not only sustains but also remains. No matter what trial we face in life, God is still the same.”

a. God has not changed his mind about bringing you your breakthrough it will come!

b. Spiritual breakthrough can be achieved when our spiritual eyes are in play and we focus not only on ourselves, but also on God, especially where He is leading us and teaching us. God brings out the best in us when we give Him our best in the midst of a trial.

4. The Bible tells us, “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses” (1 Timothy 6:12).

a. Leslie notes, “Just as Timothy was focused and committed to God’s call, and not distracted or distracted by those around him, we too should model this in our own lives. As you grow in your relationship with God and separate yourself from the distractions that hold you back, you will be on your way to achieving spiritual breakthrough.”

i. Above taken and adapted from Author: Lesli White is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth with a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications and a concentration in print and online journalism.

c. Here me please today – are you listening - Usually, when things feel so dark around you – when everything seems to be going wrong – and you're tempted to give up, that's when your breakthrough is imminent – God does break-forth in these moments. Just stay rooted in the faith and in expectation!

i. Luke 18: 1-8 - Parables on Prayer:

1. 1Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart, 2saying, “In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect man. 3“There was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me legal protection from my opponent.’ 4“For a while he was unwilling; but afterward he said to himself, ‘Even though I do not fear God nor respect man, 5yet because this widow bothers me, I will give her legal protection, otherwise by continually coming she will wear me out.’” 6And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge said; 7now, will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them? 8“I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?”- And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.

a. Quote: On preacher says it well “Again, hang in there and stay firm in Christ. Keep obeying Him, even if you don't see light ahead of you. Weeping endures for the night, but JOY comes in the morning.”

T.S. - Dark nights of the soul are common to all Christians even many spiritual leaders but spiritual breakthrough comes in the midst of this as the person or group cry out to God. But sometimes a spiritual breakthrough can ignite but them for some reason God hits the pause button waiting for the next outpouring to align.

3. God will sometimes pause in the middle of the breakthrough! – look at Joseph?

a. A case in point could be Joseph – he would get a breakthrough then a set back – like with Potiphar’s wife!

i. Psalm 37:25 ESV “I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread.”

b. Psalm 77:1-20: Comfort in Trouble from Recalling God’s Mighty Deeds. For the choir director; according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of Asaph.

1 My voice rises to God, and I will cry aloud; My voice rises to God, and He will hear me.

2 In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord; In the night my hand was stretched out without weariness; My soul refused to be comforted.

3 When I remember God, then I am disturbed; When I sigh, then my spirit grows faint. Selah.

4 You have held my eyelids open; I am so troubled that I cannot speak.

5 I have considered the days of old, The years of long ago.

6 I will remember my song in the night; I will meditate with my heart, And my spirit ponders:

7 Will the Lord reject forever? And will He never be favorable again?

8 Has His lovingkindness ceased forever? Has His promise come to an end forever?

9 Has God forgotten to be gracious, Or has He in anger withdrawn His compassion? Selah.

10 Then I said, “It is my grief, That the right hand of the Most High has changed.”

11 I shall remember the deeds of the LORD; Surely I will remember Your wonders of old.

12 I will meditate on all Your work And muse on Your deeds.

13 Your way, O God, is holy; What god is great like our God?

14 You are the God who works wonders; You have made known Your strength among the peoples.

15 You have by Your power redeemed Your people, The sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.

16 The waters saw You, O God; The waters saw You, they were in anguish; The deeps also trembled.

17 The clouds poured out water; The skies gave forth a sound; Your arrows flashed here and there.

18 The sound of Your thunder was in the whirlwind; The lightnings lit up the world; The earth trembled and shook.

19 Your way was in the sea, And Your paths in the mighty waters, And Your footprints may not be known.

20 You led Your people like a flock By the hand of Moses and Aaron.

c. The God pause – Things start breaking spiritually – you get encouraged and then everything comes to stand still!

Conclusion:

2 Chronicles 7:14 ESV: “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

Psalm 91:3-4 ESV: “For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.”

Galatians 6:9 ESV: “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”

Dr. Tony Evans stated,

“If we’re in search of a spiritual breakthrough, we have two options. First, we can choose to be broken. We can say, “Lord, I want a blessing and a breakthrough. Please break me—strip me of my sinfulness and destructive independence. I’m scared, but I trust that You love me enough to know what I can handle.” “The second option is for God to break us without our permission. This option takes a lot longer, it usually hurts a lot more, and it delays the blessing and the breakthrough. God didn’t redeem us to leave us alone and let us miss all of His blessings. He loves us too much for that. He placed a new, wonderful life inside us, and He wants to sanctify us and make us more like His Son so that we may experience it to the fullest.” From https://tonyevans.org/two-ways-for-a-spiritual-breakthrough/

What do we need to know from this message?

Answer: Breakthrough is just around the corner – stand firm – trust God – look to God – Cry out to God – in the darkness – don’t give up! Breakthrough is coming! It’s a promise of God.

Why do we need to know this truth?

Answer: “It’s always darkest before the dawn.” Or “This too will pass” are great theological truths about the character and faithfulness of God to bring the promised breakthrough. We need to know God will never gives us more than we can handle – he will bring the sun up over the horizon – believe it – it’s His Word and Promise!

What do we need to do?

Answer: Don’t give up – keep pressing through the trial – the darkness – the pain – God will bring the breakthrough – seek Him – cry out to Him – fast and pray for breakthrough - trust Him “God is who He says He is!” He can do this for the USA.

Why do we need to do this?

Answer: When we keep the faith – keep trusting – put our trust in God – He promises a breakthrough with many blessings. We just cannot quit! We cannot role over and let the Devil destroy America!
