1 Samuel 3:1 KJV And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.
1 Samuel 3:1 NKJV Then the boy Samuel ministered to the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no widespread revelation.
1 Samuel 1 & 2 introduces us to Samuel’s miraculous birth. He was born to Hannah the wife of Elkanah. She was distraught and broken because of her bareness. So she prayed often. On one particular time as she was praying and fasting (an often overlooked note) God gave her a word through Eli. God was going to heal her womb and she was going to bear a child.
Two things to note about this story
1) I believe that this answer to prayer came after intense prayer that was increased by fasting. I believe we underestimate the power of fasting.
2) Hannah’s dedication of the purpose of this child.
1 Samuel 1:11 Then she made a vow and said, "O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head."
To me this is the call to all parents. As a parent we should dedicate our children to the Lord. Not just as a ceremony on Sunday morning but as a desire in our heart to find their purpose in God’s work. Whatever that may be.
Here there was a purpose. Whether or not Hannah knew how great a child Samuel would become is debatable but it all began right here. Samuel is given to the work of God’s kingdom.
Why?

There was something missing in the land. It was more than likely because of the sin of Eli and his sons. The sin of Eli was that he tolerated the sin of his sons. Eli was the priest of God. He should have been hearing from the Lord yet God has pulled away from Israel.
There was no Open Vision (revelation) in the Land. The word of the Lord was rare in those days. This is hard to fathom.
When the Word of the Lord is rare
Have you had the word of the Lord been rare in your life.
There is an interesting combination of words here. Open Vision or Paw-rats khaw-zone.
Breakthrough comes from revelation.

Importance of Having a Vision
Habakkuk 2:2-3 And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
Reads it. This is more than jus reading and passing by, this is reading it, getting excited and running with it. It is emotional.
(3) For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.
There is an appointed time for this vision. But it will speak. Be patient. Tarry. Wait for it. Trust the Lord it will come.
Mat 6:19-24 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; (20) but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
