Several times as Jesus was teaching the good old boys got in a heated debate about greatness.
Matthew 20:24 And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren. 25 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. 26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; 27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
I WANT TO BE A STAR! LEARN A LESSON?
God ‘s timing is amazing. I WAS TRAVELING PLAYING THE BASS GUITAR. I had always played lead, but The Gospel-aires of Middlesboro, Ky. needed a bass picker. We had traveled hours in several churches that weekend in West Virginia. Each place we played seemed everybody bragged on the lead player, Jerry Evans. Jerry is a better player than I am. But I was playing the bass guitar. No one bragged on me. No one. While everyone was sleeping, I was driving and feeling sorry for myself. No one saw me?
My wife picked me up in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. I loaded my bass guitar in my VW Beetle and we traveled toward the house. I said to my wife I was going to burst the bass on the telephone pole in our drive way. Linda never said a word. As I was down shifting the Bug to pull in the drive, Linda said: You can’t break the bass. I said why not? She said: You still owe a $1,000 on it. The next day I was on campus and I learned a ministry lesson.
THE UNASHAMED ACCOMPANIST
I worked from 1970 to 1974 on my Bachelor’s Degree at LMU. Many classes were required. One required class was Music Appreciation. Beside the class room lessons we had to spend many hours in the listen library listening to many artist and music. One day I was digging through the material and I ran across a man that touched my heart strings.
The title of the album was THE UNASHAMED ACCOMPANIST. That really caught my eye. So I started reading the cover and the back. This man traveled the world playing the piano for great artist. He played for violinist Renee Chemet. But later this UNASHAMED ACCOMPANIST DECIDED HE RATHER ACCOMPANY VOCALIST. So he traveled with John Coates a famous tenor singer from Great Britain. From the 1920’s until his death this man played for the greatest vocal singers in the world.
Moore is credited with doing much to raise the status of accompanist as a subservient role to that as an artistic partner. In 1943 GERALD MOORE wrote a book called: “THE UNASHAMED ACCOMPANIST.” Moore was known for lectures, radio, theater and television work. Gerald Moore accompanied every famous solo singer as an instrumentalist to accompanying at the piano.
The album I was looking at was the great tenor opera singer, LUCIANO PAVAROTTI, the great Italian operatic tenor.
PAVAROTTI’S name was huge on the billboard, Moore was in very small letters. But Moore had a great understanding it was his great piano playing that MADE THE VOICES BEAUTIFUL. Gerald Moore made history by bringing the role of an accompanying to serve something else.
IN HOW MANY CLUBS ARE YOU A MEMBER? I WOULD LOVE EVERY CHURCH TO ESTABLISH A HUR CLUB.
I have pastored full time 38 years. I have always desired to establish a HUR CLUB. What is a HUR CLUB? Hur was a friend and helper of Moses and Aaron. Jewish history teaches HUR was married to Miriam. So Hur would have been a brother in law to both Moses and Aaron. We do not know very much about HUR. It appears HUR was not a major player like his brothers in law were. YET AT THE SAME TIME HUR IS RECORDED SEVERAL TIMES in the Bible.
Hur was no major star in the movie. Hur played a supportive role. He was an UNASHAMED ACCOMPANIST.
Exodus 17:9 And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand. 10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12 But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
MAYBE GOD HAS NOT CALLED YOU TO BE A BIG STAR, MAY GOD HAS CALLED YOU TO BE A HELPER… DON’T BE AFRAID ANSWER THE CALL, HELP YOUR PREACHER… HOLD THE STANDARD HIGH. LET YOUR PASTOR KNOW YOU SUPPORT AND LIFT HIS ARMS. GOD HAS A PLAN, WILL YOU BE A HUR? PAUL KNEW HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO PRAY FOR OUR LEADERS… FOLLOW THIS 7 STEP PLAN AND BE A HUR CLUB MEMBER.
Romans 15:30 Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me; 31 That I may be delivered from them that do not believe in Judaea; and that my service which I have for Jerusalem may be accepted of the saints; 32 That I may come unto you with joy by the will of God, and may with you be refreshed. 33 Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.
Colossians 4:3 Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds:
1. PRAY FOR UNITY FOR YOUR PASTOR…
We need oneness, harmony, togetherness, undivided, unified attitudes in the camp.
We can even agree to disagree. But to thrive and accomplish God’s plan we are stronger together than we are individual. Bury the ego issues and let us all pull together.
SYNERGY: one horse can pull 800 pounds, another can pull 600 pounds. Together they can pull 2,500 pounds.
Two or three agree together. The HUR TEAM!
2. PRAY FOR YOUR LEADERS TO MOVE IN THE VEIN OF DELIVERANCE.
To be delivered means total victory, not partial, liberated, rescued, freed, advance.
Pray for his personal, family and church deliverance. Pray that he will lead others to deliverance.
The HUR CLUB presses forward.
3. PRAY THAT YOUR SPIRITUAL LEADERS WILL BE ACCEPTED BY THE SAINTS…
The HUR CLUB will know this little lesson. Why should leaders need prayers to be accepted by the saints?
Looks like the saints would support their man? The HUR CLUB lifts the arms willingly. The Hur Club will receive, accept, assist, support, approve, help and aid the man of God. There will be no ego, jealousy or competition.
4. PRAY FOR JOY, DIVINE JOY IN THE SERVICE THE LEADERS ARE CALLED TO DO.
Your pastor, his family and the church need delight in God’s work. We need to find pleasure and be glad while doing and continuing to do God’s work. The Hur Club will be cheerleaders.
5. PRAY FOR DIVINE REFRESHMENT. The Hur Club knows ministry is draining and exhausting, so we will pray for a spirit of restoration, renewal, recycle, revive. We will also help plug the holes where trouble
will leak out the refreshment spirit of God.
6. PRAY FOR PEACE… Our leaders need a season free from disturbances and bring to an end the hostiles.
May they feel security and calm from the camp and from God. The Hur Club seeks a peace that passes all understanding.
7. PRAY FOR GOD’S OPEN DOOR FOR MINISTRY. The Hur Club understands God opens doors and God closes doors. We need the enemies of the cross to be quieted, and God to tear down any barrier that restricts the growth of the church and the growth of the minister. Open the creative minds.
Mark 9:35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all. IN THE BIBLE…
CONCLUSION: WE NEED A HUR CLUB ACTIVE IN EVERY CHURCH. Let us come together and support the local assembly’s leaders. God open the eyes of our heart that we can see MY SUPPORT CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. My compassion can cause a HUR CLUB TO ARISE AND BE ACTIVE IN PRAYER. There is coming a great turn around when the Hur’s the accompanist will be recognized. Until then be faithful in the little things.
Matthew 19:30 But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.
LAST ARE FIRST REMEMBER JESUS’ LESSON ON WASHING FEET? WHAT WAS THE LESSON ALL ABOUT? True leadership must learn servant hood is the attitude Jesus Christ exemplified… Service, servant hood is the greatest example of love known to humans.
