The Christmas Lesson of Colors By Wade Martin Hughes, Sr Kyfingers@aol.com
TEXT: Genesis 37:3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours. Luke 2:7 And Mary brought forth her first borned son and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for him in the inn.
Let us study the lesson of colors on the Christmas tree. Each color has a hidden meaning. I have C9 light bulbs (the big bulbs) in all the colors listed below, two each. Or I also have 32 shiny glass ornaments with the colors, different people either screw in the light bulb, or place the ornament on the tree as I discuss that color. I have used these over the years. If you have trouble finding the color, I just paint the colors on light bulbs or the shiny ornaments. This requires some effort, but this builds a lesson to be discussed each Christmas.
1. RED LIGHTS REPRESENT THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST, MY SAVIOR AND LORD.
Heb. 9:22 ... and without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins.
1 John 1:7 ... and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses from all sin.
2. BLACK LIGHTS REPRESENT DEATH, SIN AND DISHARMONY WITH GOD.
Normally we see few black lights at Christmas time, as we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
But occasionally we see a black light to remind us not to break God’s heart nor His commandments.
Black and light are not normally together, as black is the absence of light.
3. WHITE LIGHTS REPRESENTS THE PURITY OF JESUS, AND THE CLEANSING POWER OF THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB.
Psa. 51:7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: WASH ME, and I shall be whiter than snow. A good point on white is there is a big difference between whitewashing, just covering the dirt, and washing white.
WE WILL ALSO HAVE WHITE ROBES IN HEAVEN. Rev 6:11 And white robes were given unto every one of them... Note: white robes come in one size, that is the size of Jesus, we grow to fit them, we do not alter them to fit us.
God will give us a white stone with our new name written on it. Revelation 2:17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
4. CLEAR LIGHT, clear bulb represents the Christian testimony. Genesis 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
Matthew 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. This little light of mine I’m going to let it shine. You can touch people no one else can. The darker the night the greater the light.
5. GREEN LIGHT, GREEN IS REPRESENTATIVE OF GROWTH. 2 Peter 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. Life on this planet would die without the photosynthesis of green plants. This process turns the dirty air, carbon dioxide back into breathable oxygen.
JESUS GREW IN GRACE AND KNOWLEDGE.
6 DARK BLUE LIGHT. BLUE WAS ONE OF THE PRIMARY COLORS IN AND AROUND THE TABERNACLE. Over the temple hung blue curtains. The veil in the temple was blue and purple, when Jesus died it was torn from the top to the bottom.
On the altar there was laid a blue covering of dyed badgers skin, this blue skin held the instruments of ministry.
The ephod that the preachers wore was blue background, represented God’s holiness.
The priest wore a little blue thing hanging on their forehead to remind them of God’s precious gifts and God’s holiness.
At the edge of the preachers garment, on the hem there were blue sach, tassel, fringe with a golden bell to remind them of the commandments of the Lord, Number 15:39-40-41.
Mordecai wore a robe of blue and white out of the Kings chambers after God had delivered His people from Haman. Esther 8:5 Blue and white became a symbol of deliverance.
7. SKY BLUE LIGHT. SKY BLUE OR A LIGHT BLUE REMINDS US OF HEAVEN. There is a real place called heaven.
John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
DON’T FORGET HEAVEN. Heaven is a prepared place for a prepared people.
8. MEDIUM BLUE LIGHTS. Medium blue represents water. Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Water of baptism IS AN EXTERNAL SIGN of an INTERNAL CHANGE, or making a public commitment to follow Jesus.
This blue serves to remind us of the bruises Jesus suffered for us.
9. YELLOW LIGHTS. Yellow represents the inner lining feathers of a dove, the feathers near the heart of a dove... Psalm 68:13 Though ye have lien among the pots, yet shall ye be as the wings of a dove covered with silver, and her feathers with yellow gold. Noah sent out a dove, the dove was a test to see if the waters receded. When Jesus was baptized by John, the Dove landed on His shoulder, as the Father spoke ... this is My Beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. The Holy Spirit our comforter and teacher is represented by a dove.
10.GOLD COLORED LIGHTS. The golden color lights remind us of Eternity. Revelation 21:21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. The wedding band is a circle of gold, no start --- no end. Gold is the most enduring metal we know. The streets in heaven are pure gold.
11. PURPLE LIGHTS. PURPLE IS THE COLOR OF ROYALTY. John 19:2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, SEVERAL LAYERS OF THE CURTAINS IN THE TEMPLE WERE PURPLE. We talk about the purple robe Jesus wore. Purple garments represented RANK and AUTHORITY Lydia in the NT made fine purple cloth and helped support the work of the ministers in her offerings.
12. ORANGE LIGHTS. Orange is the color to remind us of the rusty nails and the hammer of a cruel Roman soldier, three rusty nails and one hammer were the tools man used to hold the Son of God to the cross. But, we know those rusty nails were just the external, visible means --- it was LOVE that held Jesus to the cross. That day three died on the cross, one died in sin; one died to sin; one died FOR SIN. John 20:25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
13. MULTI-COLORS. When we see collective colors together, their collective hues represent unity and togetherness. The coat on many colors represents blessings… the coat of many colors represent the Father’s love. Genesis 37:3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours. Genesis 12:3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
CONCLUSION: There are four basic colors: red, blue, green, yellow. There are seven seen colors in the rainbow. The rainbow is a promise from the Father to us. There are seven colors in the rainbow.... Orange, indigo (blue), violet, yellow, red, blue and green. I hope you can teach others the real meaning behind the Christmas colors. Let there be discussion and teach the people and children.
