Series: Knowing God [#17]
EL GIBBOR- MIGHTY GOD
Isaiah 9:6
Introduction:
This has been a long week. I have definitely needed to depend on God and when I didn’t, it was very obvious. This morning, we are going to look at the 2nd name of God the Son found in this verse. I want us to see that Jesus was the greatest and worst person to ever live on this Earth.
Isaiah 9:6 (NIV)
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Jesus is our Mighty God. I want us to simply look at these 2 words this morning as we describe the Savior of the World.
The name El Gibbor tells us…
1. That God is mighty.
Mighty, means to possess great power and strength. Jesus is mighty. There is nothing or no one that can stop Him. Satan has tried to keep Jesus from stopping his plan for thousands of years. King Herod had all of the baby boys 2 years old and younger in Bethlehem killed in an attempt to kill Jesus. We can find in the Bible attempt after attempt of Satan trying to stop God’s plan of redemption through Jesus.
With this in mind, why do we allow things to get to us? There is nothing too big or too difficult for Jesus. There is no enemy that can destroy us when we have Jesus.
The name El Gibbor tells us…
2. That Jesus is God and man.
It is a hard concept for us sometimes to understand that Jesus is God and man; but He is. When this earth was created, Jesus was there. When man was created, Jesus was there. When Satan tried to overthrow God and was cast out of Heaven, Jesus was there. Jesus is God.
When you understand that Jesus left a perfect Heaven and took on flesh and blood in order for us to have salvation, it should make you realize how much God loves you. Once Jesus took on the form of man, He gave up many of the attributes of being God. He did that for us.
Conclusion:
I said at the beginning of the sermon that Jesus was the greatest and worst person to ever live on this earth. We all know that He was and is the greatest; but how could He be the worst? Jesus became the sin of the world on the cross. Through the power of God, Jesus had victory over death, sin, Hell, and the devil. Jesus is our Mighty God.
