3. The Righteousness of Christ

Remarks.

1. In our lesson today we are going to be discussing the theme: “the righteousness of God.” We will establish that Christ is the end of the law for righteousness; and that all believers are “justified by faith and obedience” through the gospel of Christ; and not by the Law of Moses or the works of human righteousness. Isaiah said that: “All of our righteousness are as filthy rags,” Isaiah 64:6. Paul: “There are none righteous, no, not one,” Romans 3:11.

2. First, we will consider the righteousness of Israel. Paul writes: “Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is this; that they might be saved. For I bear them record, that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge,” Romans 10:1-2. Israel was seeking their own form of righteousness – which was found in the Law and the traditions of the fathers. Like many today; which who are not seeking the God’s righteousness through the gospel of Christ; but through their own wisdom and man-made traditions.

3. Second, we will discuss the righteousness of God. Paul continues: “For they (Israel) being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, having not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God,” Romans 10:3. Paul affirms: “That their lack of righteousness is due to their ignorance of God’s will and form of righteousness”; that can only be found in Christ. Paul speaks of this to the Corinthians where he writes: “But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ. But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart... the vail shall be taken away,” 2 Corinthians 3:14-16.

4. Lastly, we will investigate the righteousness of Christ. Paul finally notes that: “Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness to everyone that believeth.” He told the Philippians, that he desired: “To be found in him (Christ), not having his own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by (the) faith,” Philippians 3:9. Christ has come to redeem us from the law of sin and death. We have been made free from sin; and granted the “righteousness of God by faith.”

BODY OF LESSON

I THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF ISRAEL

A. Paul’s heart desire was that Israel might be saved. The apostles had concerns for his countrymen; he prayed and had hopes that they might be saved. Someone in this community is praying for you, and is hoping that the word of God being preached in this meeting; might enlighten your eyes to the love and grace of God: That you might embrace the gospel of Christ and “save your soul.” Jesus said: “What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?” Mark 8:36. This will be the “theme” of this meeting the entire week: “What shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”

B. Paul continues, “I bear them record, they have a zeal of God.” He could testify that they had zeal in their religion. Notice:

1. First, Israel had a ferver and conviction in the law and in their attempts to keep it. Supposing in some fashion this would earn them righteousness before God. This characterizes many today in the religious world.

2. Further, they have zeal and conviction in their pursuits to honor God with their lips. But they were totally and ignorantly blinded to the righteousness of God. Hear Jesus: “Well hath Isaias prophesied of you hypocrites (speaking of Israel's leaders), as it is written, this people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men... Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition,” Mark 7:6-9.

3. Finally, Paul testifies of his righteousness in the traditions of the fathers: “For ye have heard of my conversation (manner of life) in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: And profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers. But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace, to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood (man),” Galatians 1:13-16.

4. Conclusion: One could have zeal and fever in their efforts to serve God; but could totally be wrong by not knowing the will of God:

a. First, Paul: “I verily thought with myself, that ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth,” Acts 26:9.

b. Further, “And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day,” Acts 23:1.

c. Finally, Jesus words to the apostles: “These things have I spoke unto you, that ye should not be offended. They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me,” John 16:1-3.

d. Illustrate: The Preaching of Apollos, Acts 18:24-28. He had zeal; but his message was wrong.

C. Paul states: “They were ignorant to God’s righteousness.” Israel’s attempt in obtaining salvation through their own form of righteousness was done in ignorance and unbelief.

They had manufactured their own set of religious practices; which did not recognize Christ as the Son of God; the Messiah or the gospel message as “the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe,” Galatians 3:22. Notice, God’s promise by faith:

1. First: “Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, and to seeds, as of many; but as of one, and to thy seed, which is Christ,” Galatians 3:16.

2. Further: “But the scripture hath concluded all under sin that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them, that believe,” Galatians 3:22.

3. Continuing: “Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made,” Galatians 3:19. Who was that seed that should come? Christ is that promised seed!

4. Next: “But before (the) faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by (the) faith,” Galatians 3:23-24.

5. Finally: “But after that (the) faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For ye are all the children of God by (the) faith in Christ Jesus! For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ... And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise,” Galatians 3:25-29; Romans 8:15-17; Galatians 4:4-7; 1 Peter 1:3-5.

D. They have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. It is this truth, Christ the Messiah and promised seed; they (Israel) have been unable or unwilling to accept as the means for obtaining the righteousness of God. Human wisdom; and arrogance has led them to reject God’s form of righteousness “which is through the faith in Jesus Christ.” Notice:

1. Solomon: “Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall,” Proverbs 16:18. Again: “A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit,” Proverbs 29:23.

2. Peter wrote: “Be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time,” 1 Peter 5:5-6.

3. James: “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up,” James 4:10. Also: “Submit yourselves therefore to God,” James 4:7.

4. Christ our example: “Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him,” Hebrews 5:7-9.

a. Jesus in the days of his flesh: John 1:14.

1) Offered up prayers and supplication with strong crying and tears;

2) Unto Him that was able to save him from death, Matthew 26:42.

3) And was heard in that he feared (NIV, prayed in reverent submission).

b. Though he were a Son: Hebrews 5:7-9.

1) Yet He learned obedience – by the things which he suffered.

2) Being made perfect.

3) He became: the author of eternal salvation.

4) To all those that obey Him.

c. Christ was obedient; therefore, we must be obedient also to God.

5. Conclusion: Because Christ was submissive to His Father and brought about our salvation through obedience (unto death, even the death of the cross). Saying at the conclusion of his crying and tears: “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt,” Matthew 26:39. Every believer must have a heart of submission and willing obedience to God; if they desire to be saved.

E. Paul argues, did not Israel “hear and know?” He wrote: “But, I say, have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. But, I say, did not Israel know? Israel had heard the word; they had the scriptures; how could they have not known of Christ?

1. Jesus said: “Search the scriptures… And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life,” John 5:39-40.

2. Yes, many believed on Him: “Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God," John 12:42-43. What did the prophet say? Notice:

a. First, Moses saith, “I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are not a people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.”

b. Second, but Esaias were very bold, and saith: “I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me. But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people,” Romans 10:18-21; Acts 7:51-53.

c. Finally, Paul states that:

1) The Gentiles: “What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which follow not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.”

Have you "attained to the righteousness of God?"

2) But Israel: “Which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.”

3) Why: “Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone; As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumbling stone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed,” Romans 9:30-33; Isaiah 28:16.

d. Jesus Head of the corner. Peter words to the council: “This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus,” Acts 4:11-13.

e. Christ the Chief corner stone. To the Ephesians Paul wrote: “Now therefore ye (Ephesians) are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints (the Jews), and of the household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone,” Ephesians 2:19-20; 1 Corinthians 3:11. Let's consider our next point.

II THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD

A. The righteousness of God is found in, and obtained through the gospel of Christ. God’s righteousness has been granted unto the believers, both Jew and Gentiles, as a result of His grace and their faith in Christ. Before I begin to unveil this thought; let me first acknowledge the holiness and righteousness of God. Notice:

1. Righteousness:

a. “The Lord is righteous in all his ways and holy in all his works. The Lord is night unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth,” Psalms 145:17-18.

b. “The Lord is upright: ... and there is no unrighteousness in Him,” Psalms 92:15.

2. Holy:

a. “But as he who hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation. Because it is written: Be ye holy; for I am holy,” 1 Peter 1:15-16; Leviticus 20:7.

b. “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord,” Hebrews 12:14.

3. Judgment:

a. “The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed,” Psalms 103:6.

b. “And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness,” Psalms 9:8.

c. “The time of this ignorance... Because he hath appointed a day, in which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained, whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead,” Acts 17:30-31.

4. Conclusion: The Lord is holy, righteous and upright in all his doings. We on the other hand are unrighteous because of our sins and iniquities. God has sent Jesus that we might be reconciled: “God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself ... we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God. For He hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him,” 2 Corinthians 5:19-21.

B. Paul declared: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, the just shall live by faith,” Romans 1:16-17.

C. One must be obedient to the faith. Notice:

1. Paul preached a gospel of obedience: “Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name,” Romans 1:1-5; Romans 16:25-27.

2. This gospel must be heard and believed: “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory,” Ephesians 1:13-14; Ephesians 4:30: Romans 8:11.

The questions before us today are these:

a. Do you trust God and Christ for your salvation?

b. Would you believe “the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation” if you heard it?

c. Are you willing to be sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise?

d. If your answer is yes; then we need to find God's answers to these questions.

D. What is the word of truth; the gospel of your salvation? Notice:

1. The gospel: “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand. By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures,” 1 Corinthians 15:1-4.

2. In this text, Paul defines the gospel, as the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. Are not these the same words of Christ himself?

3. Jesus’ words to His apostles: “And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and the Psalms concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem... Tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem,” Luke 24:44-49.

4. The message of “repentance and remission of sins” was preached in Jerusalem on the first Pentecost after the resurrection and ascension of Christ into heaven. We will discuss Peter’s sermon at the conclusion of this lesson. But for now!

E. What is “that form of the doctrine?” Paul wrote the Roman saints: “Had obeyed from their hearts that form of the doctrine, being then made free from sins.” Is it possible for one to obey it today; as they did in the first century?

1. Once the word of truth, the gospel of salvation is heard and believed.

2. Then it must be obeyed. Notice Paul, regarding Israel:

a. “But they have not all obeyed the gospel, For Isaias saith, Lord, Who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God,” Romans 10:16-17; John 12:38-41.

b. Paul is quoting Isaiah’s prophecy:

1) “Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God,” Isaiah 50:10.

2) “Who hath believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed,” Isaiah 53:1. He speaks here of the suffering savior for the sins of the world. Paul makes mention to the suffering of Christ; and our need to believe this report and respond to it in true obedience. The message of Christ is about faith and obedience to God. Without faith and obedience to the gospel we cannot obtain the righteousness of God.

3. Therefore, the believer must hear, believe and obey the gospel. Luke wrote: “The Corinthians hearing believed and were baptized,” Acts 18:8; Acts 8:12.

4. Consider now “that form of doctrine.” Paul wrote: “But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness,” Romans 6:17-18. This agrees with the teaching of Christ, John 8:31-32.

5. Here is that “form of the doctrine:” Baptism – is obeyed from the heart, Romans 6:1-6. In it, the sinner:

a. Dies to his/her sin and all its practices.

b. Is buried with Christ in a watery grave.

c. Is raised to walk in a new life.

Let’s consider now our last point – the righteousness of Christ.

III THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF CHRIST

A. Christ is the end of the law for righteousness. This word “end” is Gr: telos, which means “the termination, the limit at which a thing ceases to be, the end.” Here Christ promises to be “the perfection; the completion or the consummation of the law,” Romans 10:4. Christ has fulfilled all the righteousness that could be obtained through the Law; and has granted unto us the blessings of His righteousness through our faith and obedience to Him. Notice:

1. Christ came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets, Matthew 5:17-18.

2. Christ said on the cross “it is finished.” He had fulfilled all that was required of God to purchase our salvation, John 19:30.

3. He came to “seek and save the lost,” Luke 19:10.

4. God gave Christ to save the world from sin; because of his great love for us, John 3:16; Romans 5:8. Notice:

a. To everyone that believeth; to the Jew first and also to the Greek, Romans 1:16.

b. For with God, there is no respect of persons:

1) To the Jew: “For there is no respect of persons with God,” Romans 2:11.

2) To the Gentile: “Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him,” Acts 10:34-35; John 9:31.

c. Conclusion: We therefore conclude that the righteousness which is of God – is found in Christ Jesus; and is granted unto us by the grace of God, Romans 5:1-2. Illustrate: The Grace of God, Ephesians 2:5; Ephesians 2:8-9.

We cannot earn; nor merit this gift. However, we must accept God's gift of grace, on his terms. Illustrate: $10 bill.

B. For Moses: “For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, that the man which doeth those things shall live by them. But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise:

1. “Say not in thine heart, who shall ascend into heaven? (That is, to bring Christ down from above:) Or, who shall descend into the deep? (That is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)”

2. “But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach:”

a. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

b. “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation,” Romans 10:5-10; Isaiah 45:23.

c. The Lord requires that we acknowledge or confess Him as the Son of God, Matthew 10:32-33; Acts 8:37.

C. How shall they hear without a preacher: “For the scripture saith, whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed: For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.” Notice:

1. First, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” The seeker of salvation calls upon the name of the Lord in obedience to the gospel. Just like Paul, recall Ananias asked: “Why tarriest thou, arise and be baptized and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord,” Acts 22:16.

2. Further, “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?”

3. Finally, “And how shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!” Romans 10:11-15.

D. Righteousness in Christ is obtained through “faith and obedience,” to the gospel of Christ. This is the message that saves. The Law could not grant the righteousness of God.

Notice the writings of Paul to the Romans and Galatians:

1. First, to the Romans: “But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference,” Romans 3:21-22.

2. Further, to the Galatians: “But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, the just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, the man that doeth them shall live in them,” Galatians 3:11-12.

3. Finally, he speaks of himself: “I count all things but loss for the Excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: ... That I might win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith,” Philippians 3:8-9.

4. Conclusion: “For by grace are ye saved through the faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of work, lest any man should boast,” Ephesians 2:8-9.

E. Israel has not obeyed the gospel. Recall Paul: “But they (Israel) have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. But I say, have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world,” Romans 10:16-18. Notice:

1. The gospel is preached: “Unto every creature which is under the heavens; whereof I Paul am made a minister... Christ in you, the hope of glory,” Colossians 1:25-27.

a. Jesus commanded, that the gospel be preached unto every creature, and to all nations, Mark 16:15-16; Matthew 28:18-20.

b. Gospel to be “preached first in Jerusalem, and then unto the utter most part of the earth,” Luke 24:44-49; Acts 1:5-8; Acts 8:1-8.

c. Gospel preached by Peter on Pentecost, and 3000 souls obeyed the gospel, Acts 2:36-47. And God granted them the “remission of sins” and the “gift of the Holy Ghost.” And sealed them with the “Holy Spirit of Promise,” Ephesians 1:13-14.

2. Israel has not obeyed. Why? A Vail is upon their heart! Notice Paul:

a. There remaineth yet a vail: “And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished: But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ. But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart. Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away,” 2 Corinthians 3:13-16.

b. Some have been obedient to the faith: “And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith,” Acts 6:7. Obedient, Gr: hy-pa-kou-o, which means “to obey, to be obedient unto, submit to" that is "to the faith of Christ.”

c. Why is the gospel hid?: “Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. But if our gospel be hid... that are lost ....god of this world ... lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them,” 2 Corinthians 4:1-4.

3. The question before us today is this: “Will you obey the gospel of Christ?” You can obtain the righteousness of God by faith in Christ Jesus; by doing what they did in the first century. Illustrate: Get in the Barrel; have an obedient faith.

a. The Samaritans: “But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized,” Acts 8:12.

b. The Corinthians: “And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized,” 1 Corinthians 18:8.

CONCLUSION

A. Outline.

1. The Righteousness of Israel

2. The Righteousness of God

3. The Righteousness of Christ

B. Summarize main points.

1. First, we considered the righteousness of Israel. Paul wrote: “Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is this; that they might be saved. For I bear them record, that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge,” Romans 10:1-2. Israel was seeking their own form of righteousness – which was found in the Law and the traditions of the fathers. Like many today; which who are not seeking the God’s righteousness through the gospel of Christ; but through their own wisdom and the teachings of traditions.

2. Second, we discussed the righteousness of God. Paul continued: “For they (Israel) being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, having not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God,” Romans 10:3.

3. Lastly, we investigated the righteousness of Christ. Paul finally noted that: “Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness to everyone that believeth.” He told the Philippians, that he desired: “To be found in him (Christ), not having his own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by (the) faith,” Philippians 3:9.
