Philippians 2:12-13
The Christian's life work may be compared to the solution of a problem in mathematics
I. Addition II Peter 1:5-6
a. Faith
b. Virtue
c. Knowledge - John 17:3
d. Temperance - A God Controlled life
e. Patience - That will enable one to continue to the end. Salvation is not worked out until it is lived out.
f. Godliness - Like Him who "Went about doing good"
g. Brotherly kindness
h. Charity – This is the sum of all; Love to God and to Man
i. Nothing is said here about temporal things
II. Subtraction
a. This is the process of elimination – getting rid of things that hinder growth. Read carefully I Peter 2:1-2, Jas 1:21, Heb 12:1, Eph 4:22,24, I Cor 13:11
b. It will be seen that the things to be subtracted are many. The natural heart is vile, wicked, unclean, utterly depraved. “In me there dwelleth no good thing” Rom 7:18
c. That the work to be done must be thorough – “Slawy utterly” “Cease from sin” “Resit the devil” “Mortify etc”
III. Multiplication
a. This is the process of increase, growth, development Read I Peter 1:2, II Cor 9:10-11, Matthew 6:20, Romans 5:20
b. There is no standing still in the Christian life
c. It is either get richer or poorer
d. Go on or go back
e. O for hundredfold Christians
IV. Division II Cor 6:14-18, Jas 4:4, Romans 12:2
a. The place of separation is the place of Power – Gideon’s 300
b. Today many so-called Christians do not believe in long division
c. There is scarcely such a thing as right or wrong
d. Church or world
