Summary: We will look at the three anointings of David which outlined how God brings Divine Acceleration / Promotion in the life of a believer. He tests us in a graduation manner - from little to much - until we can reach a place of God's Divine Trust.

SERIES: DAVID - A MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART: PART 13: Divine Acceleration / Favor - Your Promotion Is Coming (PT 2)

1. 1 SAM. 16:12 So God sent for David and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.” 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.

2. 2 SAM. 2: 1 In the course of time, David inquired of the Lord. “Shall I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” he asked. The Lord said, “Go up.” David asked, “Where shall I go?” “To Hebron,” the Lord answered. 2 So David went up there with his two wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel. 3 David also took the men who were with him, each with his family, and they settled in Hebron and its towns. 4 Then the men of Judah came to Hebron, and there they anointed David king over the tribe of Judah.

3. 2 SAM. 5: 3 When all the elders from all the tribes of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel.

INTRO: DAVID: A MAN AFTER GOD'S OWN HEART PT. 13: PROMOTION IS COMING

When People Saw David Crowned King That Day In Hebron, Some Might Have Said: “What A Lucky Boy!” Same thing they said for Joseph. Also for you. But for Christians, luck has nothing to do with it. People who don’t know what you have been through have different stories to tell. They don’t know how much you have trusted God for your marriage, school, Christian life, behavior, profession and when they see you making it, they think you got it easy. Not David. His First Anointing Came When Only God Could See His Potential. But as we saw last week, that First Anointing / Favor brings affliction. But not everyone will experience divine favor - only God’s children. So as a child of the Most High God, you are spiritually and legally in line for an outpouring of divine favor and promotion. These Had Divine Favor:

1. Abraham: Divine favor rested on the life of Abraham, yet none of his family experienced it. His father, Terah, and all his family that stayed in Haran did not know God’s favor (Genesis 11). When he went down to Egypt, he had favor with the Pharaoh (Genesis 12). When he fought against the forces that captured his nephew Lot (Genesis 14), Abraham was given divine favor and victory. But none of his siblings or relatives had it.

2. Isaac: Divine favor rested on Isaac, but Isaac’s half-brother Ishmael did not know the same favor. Isaac was blessed beyond measure during one of the worst famines of his day. In Genesis 26:12, he sowed seed during drought and received a hundredfold – even though those around him remained in drought! That is real favor. And everywhere Isaac turned he prospered, so much that Abimelech, king of the Philistines, said to Isaac: Genesis 26:16: “Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we”.

3. Jacob: God favored Jacob instead of his brother Esau: Malachi 1:2-3 “Yet I loved Jacob, and I hated Esau”. Why would God set his heart on one brother and not another? Favor. Favor rested upon Jacob throughout his life. He escaped the wrath of his own brother and the trickery and mistreatment of his uncle Laban. Jacob left Isaac’s house empty and came back one of the richest men of his day. Favor cannot be explained because God see what we do not see.

4. Joseph: Favor also rested on Joseph in such a supernatural way that he was promoted in Egypt when Pharaoh had never seen him before. He was unknown to the ruler of the most powerful nation in the region, yet was given such favor that Pharaoh handed him control over the land! All protocols, rules, regulations, were broken to make him prime minister. You shall in Jesus’ Name.

5. Moses: Favor rested on Moses to such an extent that he was favored by Pharaoh’s daughter, who prepared the infant as he grew up for his divine mission.

6. Israel: Favor rested on Israel when they left Egypt to such a degree that they literally took all the riches of Egypt (Exodus 12:36). They “spoiled,” or took all the wealth, not just part of it.

7. Mordecai: God moved Mordecai (Esther 6) from gateman to second in command. God used his enemy Haman as a stepping-stone for his promotion. God will use all your enemies to lift you up.

8. Esther: Vashti was removed so Esther could be divinely lifted. Somebody will be removed for you to be lifted in Jesus name.

9. Job: So much favor rested on the life of Job that God restored twice what was taken from him.

10. Jeremiah: God’s favor rested on the prophets so amazingly that when Nebuchadnezzar seized Jerusalem in 586 B.C., he ordered that Jeremiah be freed from prison and treated well.

11. Daniel: Daniel 1:9 God brought Daniel into favor & tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.

12. Paul: Paul was given favor by the Romans themselves and protected from death when the Jews tried to kill him. He was rescued more than once, with God preserving his life repeatedly.

13. All Christians Even Today: That same tender favor is what God has promised us.

A LOOK AT THE PASSAGE

Quick Promotion Without Test Is Not God’s Process. We have traced David’s life: from humble beginnings as a Shepherd to national hero, from his pinnacle as a valiant Commander in Saul’s army to his despair as an outlaw. Now with Saul’s death, David’s story is about to change – the outlaw is about to become king. In Psalms 78:70-72: God chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens; 71 from tending the sheep he brought him to be the shepherd of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance. 72 And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them. Everything David has gone through has been a skillful guidance. He erred here and there, but realizes his mistakes and comes back to God. When you take a closer look at David’s life, you see a man who did not swiftly rise to the top, he suffered to the top. Many of us enjoy quick promotions. Now Saul Is Dead. There is no leader in Israel. What do you do as a fugitive leader? David seeks God advice. Something he had not done in a while. The Ziglag experience in 1 Samuel 30 has humbled him to wait for God’s timing.

ABOUT THE ANOINTING.

David Was Created And Anointed For This Job: Acts 13:36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption. Another meaning for the word anointed is "chosen one." Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. After Christ left the earth, He gave us the gift of the Holy Spirit. All Christians are anointed and chosen for a specific purpose in furthering God's Kingdom. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee". Jesus Said In Luke 4:18-19 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the Gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; {19} To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

DAVID’S THREE ANOINTINGS / ACCELERATION / FAVOR

1. David Was First Anointed Was In The Midst Of His Brethren (When Only God Could See His Potential).

1 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. An immediately…

 First Anointing In Bethlehem And David Was Persecuted By Saul (1 Samuel 16) to see if he would be embittered by persecution. Saul was full of jealousy and anger and he looked into killing David. This persecution was to test David heart in relation to bitterness.

 First Anointing Made David To Enter An Anointed Musical Ministry. There is a big difference between a religious song and one full of God’s anointing. Before, David sang to his sheep. But after he was anointed, David received a tremendous anointing to sing. His music now had power to confront demons. When he sang, Saul was liberated from all his oppression.

 First Anointing & He Was Tested By The Compliments Of The Women.

 First Anointing Brought The Temptation To Believe That He Was Better Than King Saul. But he won against that temptation.

If We Aren’t Approved, We Can’t Advance. David was always tested by rejection and forgetfulness. He was 17 years old when he was anointed. But he was 37 years old when he received the complete authority of anointing. It was at least 17-20 years in waiting.

2. David Was Anointed King Over Judah, After Years Of Unjust Suffering As A Fugitive From King Saul - (Intended To Enlarge You.)

2 Samuel 2:4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabesh-Gilead were they that buried Saul.

David Was Anointed King Over Just The One Tribe, Judah. When David heard of Saul’s fate, he did not rejoice, he mourned (2 Samuel 1:17-27). That is a test from God. Do you rejoice over the death of your enemy? With a patient and sensitive Spirit, he enquired from God (2 Samuel 2:1). God directed him to Hebron where the people anointed him king over one nation (2 Samuel 2:1-7). Saul’s son, Ishbosheth, became king of the Northern Tribe (2 Samuel 2:8-11). An ugly rift formed between the North and South. The struggle continued as the two houses battled for supremacy. But David’s house got stronger over Saul’s house (2 Samuel 3:1). May your house grow stronger.

The Second Anointing After 13 Years Was Different because he was approved in the test that involved the first anointing. God can now enlarge him. Anointing is like a quantity of something, you can have a lot or little. On the first anointing in Bethlehem, David becomes king, but he didn’t reign above nothing. Now, however, the menĀ“s from Judah made him their king. God gave him a new position, a new recognition, but it wasn’t complete because He wanted to see David’s heart. The test of the second anointing in David life was facing the division in the kingdom and how he would heal it. 2 Samuel 3:1 “The war between the house of Saul and the house of David lasted a long time. David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.” Again, on the second anointing everyone from Saul’s house started a war against David. The other 10 tribes came together to fight against him. But day by day Judah grows more and the other 10 tribes decrease. By the anointing we grow, but where there isn’t the confirmation of God, we decrease until we disappear. Saul’S house, the type of the flesh was growing weaker as David’s house, the type of Christ was growing stronger.

3. David Was Finally Anointed King Over All Israel – The Anointing Of God’s Approval.

2 Samuel 5:3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the Lord: and they anointed David king over Israel.

David Takes On His Greatest Anointing. He Has Risen From Childhood, Been Processed In His Youth To Ascend The Throne. In The Third Anointing, There Is No Divided Kingdom. Israel became exalted before the Lord, and the Philistines knew that David was anointed as king over Israel. Even in David's third anointing, the Philistines carried out attacks amidst defeat - new level of anointing will bring a level of confrontation. The warfare did not necessarily cease - at times it got very intense. After that anointing the reign of David reached his peak. It was the time he brought the Ark to Jerusalem and built the Tabernacle. It was that period of time that he gathered together the materials for construction for the temple. This is the anointing that the Lord has for you and the church. After this level of anointing the capacity to influence gets bigger. Your authority on the spiritual world elevates. Situation that didn’t matter before now matters. Things that you couldn’t do now you can do, because a new anointing from God has come upon you. May God increase you mightily beyond your wildest dream. Psalm 126:1 When God lifted our captivity, we were like those that dreamed. Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

WHAT THE ANOINTING DOES ON DAVID. HIS ACHIEVEMENT WAS NOTABLE.

 Expanded Israel’s Boundaries From 6,000 To 60,000 Sq. Miles.

 He Set Up Extensive Trade Routes.

 He Unified The Nation.

 The Economy Revived.

 The Military Was Strong And Enemies Subdued Israel’s Like No One Since Joshua.

 He Shaped A National Interest In Spiritual Concerns.

 He Restructured And Revived The Religious Order.

 He Brought About A Golden Age In The Hope Of The People

The Anointing Comes In Measures. Zechariah 4:10 Never despise the days of small beginnings – small anointing. Use it wisely and faithfully.
