Father’s day 2016
“A daughter’s view of her Dad”
Mark 5:22-23, 35-43
Happy father’s day
Welcome Dad’s
Honor all dads with a gift- have kids help
In order to celebrate Father’s day as it was intended I believe we need to know just what we are celebrating.
Father's Day in the United States is on the third Sunday of June. It celebrates the contribution that fathers and father figures make for their children's lives.
Father's Day is an occasion to mark and celebrate the contribution that your own father has made to your life.
Many people send or give cards or gifts to their fathers.
Common Father's Day gifts include sports items or clothing, electronic gadgets, outdoor cooking supplies and tools for household maintenance.
Father's Day is a relatively modern holiday so different families have a range of traditions.
These can range from a simple phone call or greetings card to large parties honoring all of the 'father' figures in a particular extended family.
Father figures can include fathers, step-fathers, fathers-in-law, grandfathers and great-grandfathers and even other male relatives.
In the days and weeks before Father's Day, many schools and Sunday schools help their pupils to prepare a handmade card or small gift for their fathers.
There are a range of events, which may have inspired the idea of Father's Day.
One of these was the start of the Mother's Day tradition in the first decade of the 20th century.
Another was a memorial service held in 1908 for a large group of men, many of them fathers, who were killed in a mining accident in Monongah, West Virginia in December 1907.
A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was an influential figure in the establishment of Father's Day.
Her father raised six children by himself after the death of their mother.
This was uncommon at that time, as many widowers placed their children in the care of others or quickly married again.
Sonora was inspired by the work of Anna Jarvis, who had pushed for Mother's Day celebrations.
Sonora felt that her father deserved recognition for what he had done.
The first time Father's Day was held in June was in 1910.
Father's Day was officially recognized as a holiday in 1972 by President Nixon.
So today in honor of all father’s and father Figures let me say thank you
In the past years I as have thousands of other preachers have preached a message of love on Mother’s day
A message to make the mom’s in the room beam at the shear honor of being a mom
On the other hand we pastors seldom miss the chance to mash on the men in the congregation on father’s day
Today I pray will be different
Today I want all of the dads in the room to leave here with a different perspective on what it means to be a Dad
You know almost any man can father a child
But it takes a real man to be a Dad to his child
And it takes a real man to be a Dad to a kid that did not come from your bloodline
And we honor you as well this morning
As Brad paisley sings
Thank you for being the Dad you did not have to be
Today I want to look into God’s word at a Dad
A good Dad
And I want to try and put just a little different slant on this
This morning
We are going to look at a story of a Father
It is a story you may know well
And this story is usually preached together with another well know story
But today we will focus on the one
And we will look from a different angle
Please open your bibles to Mark 5
And let’s read verses 21-24 and verses 35-43
Mark 5:21-24
Jesus got into the boat again and went back to the other side of the lake, where a large crowd gathered around him on the shore. 22 Then a leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, arrived. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet, 23 pleading fervently with him. “My little daughter is dying,” he said. “Please come and lay your hands on her; heal her so she can live.”
24 Jesus went with him, and all the people followed, crowding around him.
In this passage of scripture, Jesus had just recently healed the demon possessed man that was living in the tombs at Gennesarat
He had cast the legion of demons that had tormented this man into a herd of pigs that had run off a cliff and drowned
The people of the region were amazed at the power of Jesus
And everyone wanted to see or meet or just be near this man named Jesus
A Man named Jairus was no exception
We know he was a religious man because the bible tells us he was the leader of the local synagogue
This means he was a devout Jew
I have no doubt it also means he was a well respected man
There is however no evidence that he was a follower of Jesus at this point
But
But
He had heard of Jesus
And his daughter was very sick
So he went to see this man he had heard of
And the bibles says he fell at the feet of Jesus
That he cried out
Not for himself
But for the sake of his daughter
Verse 22
When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet, 23 pleading fervently with him. “My little daughter is dying,” he said. “Please come and lay your hands on her; heal her so she can live.”
He saw Jesus and he saw hope
Verse 23 says Jesus went with him
Jesus did not ask for details
He saw the man’s faith and
To paraphrase he said let’s go
The other well know story happens now
They are going
The people are crowding in and someone touches Jesus’
Robe
Ya’ll know this story
The simple act of touching Jesus
The faith it took caused the woman to be instantly and miracsouly healed
But this is a another story for another day
Back To Jarius
He is patiently waiting for Jesus
And while he is waiting
A message arrived
Verse 35
“While he was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. They told him, “Your daughter is dead. There’s no use troubling the Teacher now.”
The messengers are saying
It’s too late
Don’t bother Jesus anymore
Your daughter is dead
Imagine the guilt Jarius must have felt
If only I had gotten here sooner
Maybe anger at the woman who was bleeding
He could have said
I got here first
Wait your turn
No look
It’s too late
Sorrow
Despair
I can only imagine all of the emotions that were filling his mind
But then Jesus says
It’s ok
Don’t listen to them
Look at me
Everything is going to be alright
Verse 36
“Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.”
Just have faith
I once again can imagine the emotions
He just got word that his daughter had died
And Jesus says- Just have faith
But faith is what Jarius found
He found peace in the storm
And he and Jesus, the disciples
Went to Jarius’ house
When they got there
There was a huge commotion
Many you have been at the place where someone has died
Many of you as I have ---have been to a place where a child has died or someone has died unexpectantaly
Verse 38
38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw much commotion and weeping and wailing.
But Jesus just went on in like nothing had happened
The calm in the storm
And he said
Verse 39
He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.”
This caused quite a stir
No one could believe what they were hearing
Everyone thought this man named Jesus was nuts
Hey we know what dead is
And I tell you the girl is dead
Do you think we would be crying and mourning?
And planning a funeral if she was only asleep?
Jesus asked them to leave or made them leave
The bible is not clear on the method he used
In any case he cleared the room of everyone except 3 disciples
And
Jarius and his wife
Verse 41
Holding her hand, he said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means “Little girl, get up!” 42 And the girl, who was twelve years old, immediately stood up and walked around!
The girl got up
She was no longer dead
And her Mother
Her Father
And Peter, James and John were amazed
I can tell you this
I could stop right there and this would be a great story
I could stop right there and that would be enough
Jesus
My savior
Healed this young girl
But he did more than that he healed her Father and Mother emotionally
He took away their pain and grief
The young girl opened her eyes
Eyes that just a few moments earlier had been closed in death
And she saw Jesus
She saw her Mother
She saw Peter, James and John
But she also saw her Father-Jarius
And I believe when she saw him
She saw more than just her Dad
She saw in him what we as Dad’s need to pray our kids see in us
She looked at Jarius and she saw a man who had
Faith
Jarius was not playing religion
He was living faith
He fell at the feet of Jesus in faith
Knowing that Jesus could fix what was broken
Faith that went against reason
Faith that went against science
And nature
A true a real faith that is the first thing she saw
Then she saw
Commitment
Jarius was committed to his daughter
So he refused to just take what came
He vowed to make a difference
He came to Jesus and asked for healing
Not for himself
But for her
She also saw in her Father
Humility
Notice in verse 22 again
“Then a leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, arrived. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet, 23 pleading fervently with him.”
This man
Her Father was someone
Many in the community thought of him as a powerful man
Maybe even a great man
A man to be respected
But
He fell at the feet of Jesus
For her !!!
For Her
She also saw in Jarius her Dad
Action
He was not content sit by and just let things be
He went
And he had the courage to make things happen
Jesus saw his Faith
He saw his commitment
He saw his humility and he saw this man in action
So we have read the rest of the story
Jesus went
And he raised this young girl back to life
This once dead girl saw her Father with new eyes
She saw
Faith
She saw commitment
She saw Humility
And she saw action
This is what we should want our kids to see in us
Do you kids see your faith
If not
You can change that beginning this morning
It is not too late
Do they see commitment?
To them
To your family
To The Lord
If not
Once again
It’s not too late
You can start fresh today
Do they see humility in you?
Are you willing to put yourself aside and place Jesus- them – others first in your life
Once again
It’s not too late
What about action
Do they see you leading your family in Christ?
Taking the point in life
Teaching and mentoring
Setting good and Godly examples
This is what Jarius’ daughter saw
If we want to be good Dad’s we must follow Jarius’ lead
We must be men of Faith
Men of commitment
Men of humility
And men of action in the leading of our families
If I had to boil all that Jaruis’ daughter saw in her Dad down to just one point
I think she saw in him love
Unconditional
Sacrificial
Love
A love that gives of themselves to protect and provide for those in his care
Love is the key
Love is the glue
Love is the common dominator in all Good Dads
And we can see a perfect picture of that love through God’s gift of his own Son Jesus
Our healer
Our redeemer
Our rock and our salvation
And because of Jesus
And because of his commitment to us
We are adopted into the very family of God
No longer slaves to our sins
But true
Sons and Daughters of the Living God
Through Jesus Christ our Lord
Then we can know love
And then we can show love
Close from the heart
Pray
