Summary: A question form a church member for our Wednesday night Question and message time. Food for thought What would you do if Jesus came knocking on your door. This deals with our fellowship with God.

Introduction: The question before us is what would you do if Jesus came to your house?

I found a poem written by someone named Gregory,

If he came unexpectedly, I wonder what you’d do.

Oh, I know you’d give your nicest room to such an honored Guest,

And all the food you’d serve to Him would be the very best,

And you keep assuring Him you’re glad to have Him there

That serving Him in your own home is joy beyond compare.

But when you saw Him coming, would you meet Him at the door

With arms outstretched in welcome to your heavenly Visitor?

Or would you have to change your clothes before you let Him in?

Or hide some magazines and put the Bible where they’d been?

Would you turn off the radio and hope He hadn’t heard?

And wish you hadn’t uttered that last, loud, hasty word?

Would you hide your worldly music and put some hymn books out?

Could you let Jesus walk right in, or would you rush about?

And I wonder if the Savior spent a day or two with you,

Would you go right on doing the things you always do?

Would you go right on saying the things you always say?

Would life for you continue as it does from day to day?

Would your family conversation keep up its usual pace?

And would you find it hard each meal to say a table grace?

Would you sing the songs you always sing, and read the books you read,

And let him know the things on which your mind and spirit feed?

Would you take Jesus with you everywhere you’d planned to go?

Or would you, maybe, change your plans for just a day or so?

Would you be glad to have Him meet your very closest friends?

Or would you hope they’d stay away until His visit ends?

Would you be glad to have Him stay forever on and on?

Or would you sigh with great relief when He at last was gone?

It might be interesting to know the things that you would do?

If Jesus Christ in person came to spend some time with you.

Core: While we see in this poem Jesus coming to visit let’s look at it from another perspective. Another question I think we might ask, where is Jesus right now? Remember what Paul said to us in 1 Corinthians 6: 19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

Body

I. Do you see this the Holy Spirit is dwelling in you doesn’t that mean He resides in you

A. Look too at Colossians 1: 27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

1. Do you see that Christ in you

2. I believe Christ is residing with us

3. He visits us daily, doesn’t He?

4. Remember too what we see in Revelation 3: 20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

B. You see Jesus knocks at the door of believers everyday

1. Jesus will not crash in the door

2. In fact the handle is only on one side the side we must reach for and open it with.

3. Every day we make a decision to leave that door shut.

4. We are saved, we will go to heaven

5. We just aren’t fellowshipping with Him, we are not under control, not lead by the Holy Spirit

6. Or to open the door of our heart to fellowship with Him.

7. Ephesians 5:18 applies, we are either controlled by the Old sin nature

8. Or we are controlled by or filled with the Holy Spirit.

9. You see what Jesus said here in verse 20 of Revelation 3, “I will come in to him”

10. Then a little further “will sup with him, and he with me”

11. You see this is a fellowship verse not a salvation verse.

12. He will feed us His word daily and we will get to know Him better.

C. You see it is not a question of “If” Jesus comes knocking on your door

1. It is when He comes knocking on your door.

2. It is What do you do when Jesus comes knocking on your door

3. He knocks everyday wanting come in to you

4. He wants to sup with you.

D. God still wants to have daily fellowship with you

1. No matter what you have done in the past

2. No matter what you are going to do in the future

3. He wants to enter into your life daily and fellowship with you

4. Something you need to remember, we all need to remember “if” God will fellowship with those who have sinned.

5. Those who have let bitterness get into their lives

6. Those who have stepped away from Church

7. Then we too must seek to fellowship with them

8. Because Christ is seeking to fellowship with every believer, every day.

II. Let’s look at Luke 7: 34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!

A. Do you see who Jesus associated with on this earth?

1. We see the same incident in Matthew 11: 19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

2. Jesus was a friend to all

3. Who does Jesus associate with

4. Publicans the outcast of society

5. Sinners those who miss the mark and

6. That is who He fellowshipped with.

B. We need to pay close attention to His invitation for Fellowship

1. You know as we grow in spiritual maturity we should grow in our daily fellowship with Him

2. We must work hard

3. This message really fits with what we’ve been preaching on Sunday Morning

4. Fellowship with Christ applies to our walking in Him

5. Walking with Him

6. Walking worthy of the vocation where with we are called

7. Walking a flourishing walk

8. Even in our old age

C. You remember Jesus said in Revelation to every church, I know who you are and I know what you do.

1. We can’t hid things from God

2. That is why we need to practice 1 John 1:9 to keep fellowship going with Christ

3. You see we need fellowship with Him daily

4. We need to sup with Him eating with Him

5. Letting Him into our lives daily

6. When He knocks on the door of our heart.

D. We can make excuses

1. Real good excuses for not having fellowship with someone

2. They hurt me, they hurt my feelings

3. They talked bad about me and well I am hurt

4. But if you are walking in fellowship with Jesus all that must be set aside

E. If the truth is known all of it is due to the fact that we are simply ignoring Christ

1. Ignoring His word

2. We just let Him keep knocking and keep the door closed to him and others

3. We don’t sup with Him

4. He said “if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”

5. So He knocks everyday on the door

6. What do you do when He comes knocking?

III. We should know His voice and His knock

A. We learn to recognize the voice, recognize the knock

1. We know the voice and knock of those who truly love us

2. We as believers are to walk as He walked, that’s what 1 John 2 tells you know the verse we looked at this past Sunday Morning.

3. Look at 1 John 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. You see what it says “walk, even as He walked.”

4. Notice the word abideth in this verse

5. Walk as He walked

6. He associated with sinners

7. Aren’t we all sinners?

8. As believers in Jesus though we are sinners saved by Grace

9. When we confess our sins God forgives them everyone

10. Shouldn’t we too be forgiving of those who Trespass against us

B. When Jesus comes knocking what do you do?

1. Jesus is always looking for us

2. Looking to fellowship with us

3. There were two people one time who sinned a great sin.

4. Jesus came knocking and seeking them.

5. Look at Genesis 3: 8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

6. Then verse 9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? 10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. 11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? 12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

7. Jesus came seeking fellowship

8. Adam and Eve were hiding from Him

C. Their home was closed to Him because they had sin in it

1. What about us do we hide from Him when He comes knocking

2. Do we have things we don’t want Him to know about

3. Guess what He knows about them

4. He already knew that they sinned,

5. He made them confess their sin to Him

6. Then He offered a sacrifice for that sin, isn’t that what He has done for us?

D. We see many years later another who Jesus came to see

1. Genesis 5:24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

2. So great was Enoch’s answering Christ knock

3. He answered it everyday

4. And because he did Christ took him Home

E. Another man had Christ come calling

1. You might have heard of him

2. Look to Genesis 18:1 And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;

3. Look what He did, 2 And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground, 3 And said, My LORD, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant: 4 Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree: 5 And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said. 6 And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth. 7 And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetcht a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it. 8 And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat.

4. Abraham supped with Christ

5. He made great preparations when He saw Christ coming

6. He prepared a meal and they ate together

F. We see several in the gospels

1. Luke 19: 5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house

2. Then what did Zacchaeus do 6 And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.

3. He received Christ joyfully

4. Then we see a change happen in verses 8 & 9, 8 And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. 9 And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.

G. Luke 10:38-42, we see 38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

1. Jesus came to their house and was received there by Martha we are told

2. She had a sister named Mary verse 39 says, 39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.

3. Mary laid at His feet and fellowshipped with Him, she heard His words, isn’t that fellowship

4. Martha was busy trying to clean and prepare a meal, cumbered with a load of care and she began to stew about Mary not helping her

5. 40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me

6. Jesus responded, in verse 41 and 42, 41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

7. Mary chose to fellowship and sup spiritually

8. She wasn’t trying to work to please Him

9. Isn’t that what we should when Jesus comes knocking on our door?

10. Choosing to fellowship to sup with Him!

Conclusion: Hopefully this clears things up on Jesus coming and knocking on your door. He comes every day. He wants to fellowship everyday with us. Adam and Eve hid from Him because of sin. Enoch answered the knock every day and walked with God until God took Him. Abraham saw Him coming and prepared a meal so they could sup together, just like we need to read scripture and grow into maturity by supping with Him every single day. Zacchaeus climbed up a tree seeking Jesus and he came away changed after supping with Jesus. Mary sat at His feet and heard His word, she was supping with Him and Martha was cumbered with a load of care and got her feelings hurt. She wanted so to please Christ with all that work but Christ told her Mary chose the good part, she heard Jesus words and received them and supped with Him. So what would we do if Jesus comes knocking. If sin is in the life we would be like Martha, Adam and Eve and hide from Christ or express our anger. If we open the door we receive Him like Enoch, Abraham and Zaccheaus then we sup with Him and like Mary we hear His words. So that is what we will do if He comes knocking on our door.
