Problem is our values are out of whack
The store manager knew something was wrong when a customer stepped up to the cash-register with a claw hammer and it rang up for $199.95. The customer’s jaw dropped and asked: “What’s this hammer made of, Platinum?”
An employee noticed that a big screen TV was priced at $14.95.
- Many items for sale had their values out of sorts.
- We need to be careful that we don’t get values in our life switched
- Creating chaos of price tags for things we value most.
- Paul makes it clear what we should value most:
- Philippians 3:7–8 (ESV) — 7 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ
Philippians 3:10 (ESV) — 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,
- If our pursuit is for self-satisfaction we are ruined
If wealth and possessions are the measure of a man, then Jesus is out of the running!
- He was born in a stable
- Mary was a nondescript humble Jewish mother
- Joseph worked as a poor carpenter.
- He Himself said in Matthew 8:20 (AV) — 20 And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
- He left no safety deposit box when He died!
- If happiness and success depended on things, then Jesus was miserable and defeated.
- But He wasn’t
Jesus Had Full Joy
John 15:11 (AV)
— 11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
- He says my joy, not joy like mine.
Hebrews 1:9 (AV)
— 9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
- Oil - symbol of wealth
- Poured out on Him
- Gladness - to leap or jump, ecstatic expressive joy
- Jesus was so full of joy his enemies called Him a wine bibber & a glutton
Isaiah 61:3 (AV)
— 3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.
We become our own worst enemy
- Filling our lives with this world's empty promises
- Remember the sower & the seed
Mark 4:19 (AV) — 19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
So how do we rid our lives of the fluff & empty bubbles?
- Washing my Blazer
- Bucket was full of soap & wax polish
- I couldn't get the soap out
- I had to run water continuously until it finally ran clean
- We often act on a one time principle
- It didn't work so we give up
- To remove the nagative
- Keep pouring in worship, praise, obedience, prayer, scripture
- Our life will change as the old is replaced with the new
Titus 3:5 (AV)
— 5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Romans 12:2 (AV)
— 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
1. I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold;
I’d rather be His than have riches untold;
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands;
I’d rather be led by His nail-pierced hand
Refrain:
Than to be the king of a vast domain
Or be held in sin’s dread sway;
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today.
2. I’d rather have Jesus than men’s applause;
I’d rather be faithful to His dear cause;
I’d rather have Jesus than worldwide fame;
I’d rather be true to His holy name
