Summary: Celebrating the Ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven after His ministry on earth was through. This is kind of a forgotten or at least overlooked event in the story of salvation. Let's not forget ...

This past Thursday was Ascension Day.

The 40th day after the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead.

Acts 1:1-13a

“In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day He was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles He had chosen.

“After His suffering, He presented Himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that He was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

“On one occasion, while He was eating with them, He gave them this command:

“Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift My Father promised, which you have heard Me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

“Then they gathered around Him and asked Him, ‘Lord, are You at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?’

“He said to them: ‘It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by His own authority.’

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

“After He said this, He was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid Him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.

“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.”

“Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city. When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying.”

What an amazing story! And, that is just the end of a crucial segment of an amazing story that started before the foundation of the earth!

Let’s take a look at a few verses ….

Acts 1:3

“After His suffering, [Jesus] presented Himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that He was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.”

After His suffering - they knew all about Jesus’ suffering:

The betrayal

The agony in the Garden of Gethsemane

The multiple “trials”

The beatings that took place in several of the locations

Blindfolded beatings with mockery

Crown of thorns

The scourging that left Him almost unrecognizable

Carrying the cross to Calvary

The crucifixion

Because of the brutality of all of this it was almost impossible for even His closest followers to believe He was alive. They knew that He did not survive, so, how could He be alive?

In those days they had more of a belief in spirits wandering around and interacting with humans than we do today. And, some of the activities of Jesus seemed to promote that He was just a spirit and not a resurrected human body!

For instance ... Jesus “appears” in locked rooms …

John 20:19

“On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you!’”

John 20:26

“A week later His disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you!’”

Jesus disguises Himself

Luke 24:15-16

“As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus Himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing Him.”

He tells them where to fish

John 21:16

“[Jesus] said, ‘Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.’ When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.”

So, with all of these incredible events He really did need some convincing proofs that He was and is alive and that’s what He gave them!

He ate with them

He showed His wounds to them

He taught them

He appeared to over 500 of them at one time!

He fed them

Jesus is alive …

Now, that’s great news Jesus … but …

Acts 1:6

“Then they gathered around [Jesus] and asked Him, ‘Lord, are You at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?’”

Did you ever miss seeing something great because you were looking the wrong way?

Now, Jesus had just finished saying, “You will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” And instead of saying, “what does that mean?” or “how will that happen?” or even, “wow, that’s great!” they go back to their old tired out question …

It’s like the kids in the back seat of the car on a long road trip.

What is it they ask every 2 miles, “Are we there yet?”

Jesus was giving them something great! The baptism of the Holy Spirit but that was not what was captivating their vision. They wanted the Kingdom to be restored to Israel.

It reminds me of one time years ago when I was walking through a parking lot and found a quarter. For the next few minutes I found myself staring at the ground all of the time. Perhaps there would be another quarter or a dime or even a dollar bill. Finally it occurred to me that I could spend the rest of my life looking at the ground which was mostly covered with garbage or I could look at the beauty of the world around me.

When it comes to your life, what are you looking for? Are you looking at the things of this world as some treasure to be hunted for?

Jesus had promised an eternal spiritual renewal to His disciples but they were looking for a political victory for Israel.

Here’s an amazing thing; after the disciples received the promised Holy Spirit they never once again in all of the Scriptures asked about the restoration of the Kingdom of Israel!

If the object of my affections is something of this world, if the thing I hunger and thirst for is something other than God and His eternal kingdom I probably have not received the baptism of the Holy Spirit that Jesus was promising. Just saying …

So, Jesus has proven to His disciples that He is indeed alive and in the flesh; raised from the dead!

He has promised them the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

He has answered their question about the restoration of the Kingdom of Israel by not answering their question and then He just rises into the sky!

Acts 1:9 says

“After [Jesus] said this, He was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.”

So, Jesus just disappeared from their sight they just stood there looking up into the sky and can you blame them?

Acts 1:10-11 says

“They were looking intently up into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.

“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.”

Just imagine two angels coming to you and asking you, “Why are you doing what you’re doing? Don’t you know that Jesus is coming back?”

Why are you still living a self-centered life?

Do you love the Lord your God with all of your heart, soul, mind and strength by the enabling power of the Holy Spirit?

What evidence is there in your life to prove that?

Do you love others in a way that shows that you are just as concerned about their welfare as you are about your own?

What evidence is there in your life to prove that?

If the answer is “No.” then you’ve got some 'splainin to do!

Here’s the thing … it always circles back to Jesus and your relationship with Him.

First, we need to be a disciple of Christ (explain)

We need to nurture our relationship with Him via the Holy Spirit (explain)

We need to set aside our version of “restoring the Kingdom of Israel” that dominates our life (explain)

We need to stop staring at the sky (explain)

We need to do the last thing that Jesus told us to do (explain)

We need to be ready for His return (explain)

All of this is only possible because of Jesus and His perfect sacrifice
