The psalmist knew that hiding from God was a fruitless enterprise. 7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? (Psalm 139:7).
He also knew (and described in various graphic passages such as Psalm 51) that it was his sin that drove him to try to hide from God and which erected a wall of separation between him and God.
The very first human sin led the very first humans to hide from God. "8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. (Genesis 3:8).
Earlier, they had tried to hide their nakedness, newly understood because of their sin. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves (v. 7). We have been hiding from God ever since.
- Why do we hide our wrong doings from others?
Illustration: When you get in trouble and are caught hiding something you knew you shouldn’t have been doing. We say we are sorry. But Are we truly sorry about what we did or are we sorry we were caught?
There is no hiding of sin. 5 You know my folly, O God; my guilt is not hidden from you. (Psalm 69:5). “You can run but you can’t hide.”
How much better to acknowledge and repent of our sins, and say with David: 9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (Psalm 51:9, 10).
When you get in trouble you feel bad don’t you? But when you finally come clean about what you did and say you’re sorry, doesn’t that take a load off your shoulders? You just can’t help to not feel better after saying you’re sorry.
