THE WONDERS OF GOD
Text: Ps. 19
Intro:
1. “I want to see, I want to touch, smell, hear God.”
2. I want to know He exists.
3. Jesus said of the wind: “ the wind blows wherever it pleases, you hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going.”
4. The evidence is all around you but you can’t touch, taste, smell the wind.
5. Such is the declaration of the Psalmist
I. THE HEAVENS DECLARE, THE SKIES PROCLAIM VV. 1-6
A. Get your eyes off of yourself and ponder the beauty, the
grandeur & majesty of the heavens above
1. they declare, they speak of a might God 24/7, 365 @ yr.

B. They declare without speaking
1. v. 2 day after day they pour forth their speech
2. night after night they display knowledge
3. there is no speech, no words, no sound of a voice, but they
are “heard around the world.” There is no place on earth that
escapes the message of God by the heavens.
4. That is why Paul could say in Rom. 1:20 “for since the creation
of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and
divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from
what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
C. They declare & proclaim God’s glory
1. they declare His power, wisdom and majesty
2. we usually focus intellectually on the mechanics of heaven—
orbit, placement of planets, earth’s axis 7 rotation---the
science of things looking for evidence.
3. But what about shooting stars? The multicolored sunrises and
sunsets, double rainbows, bursts of light radiating through the
clouds , deep blue billowy clouds?
D. The psalmist focuses on the sun:
1. pitched a tent---made a dwelling for the sun. (perhaps night)
2. two metaphors:
a) the sun is like a bridegroom---radiant, hopeful
b) the sun is like a champion, a strong man, athlete about to
run his course, his race.
II. SCRIPTURE DECLARES vv. 7-11
A. God reveals a lot about himself in his creation, but he moves to a
closer stance with his creation
B. His word, His revealed will-- personalized.
C. Six synonyms describe his revelation, followed by what they do:
1. his law is perfect—complete, flawless
Reviving the soul, restoring, making right rescues, preserves
2. his statutes are trustworthy—testimony , demands are clear
and witness to God’s moral character
And they input wisdom to the inexperienced---teach the skill
of living according to God’s will.
3. His precepts/statutes are right---upright, straight forward
And make one joyful—lighten the heart; a reward for
Obedience
4. His commands are radiant—(pure) without moral defect
Giving light to the eyes—dispelling darkness & confusion
5. The fear of the Lord is pure (another way of saying what he
has been describing, the statutes, law, etc. is worship and
reverence…
Will endure forever; “heaven and earth will pass away, but my
word will never pass away.”
6. His ordinances/judgments are trustworthy
They are altogether righteous—they accurately reflect God’s
moral will for his creation and his people.
D. Scripture reveals truth about God, about man and about God’s
desire for man.
1. man needs outside instruction from God to know how to obey
2. we need a truthful & accurate assessment of who we are &
what we need
3. we need the truth to enlighten us,
4. we need something trustworthy, that will always be true, be
present and available to us.
III. OUR SOUL DECLARES VV. 10-14
A. The one who is open to, searching for, thirsty for God, will be
rewarded.
1. God’s ordinances, statutes, precepts, law—is more precious
than gold
2. they are sweeter than honey,
3. we are warned,
4. we are rewarded
5. “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
they will be filled.”
B. We seek, we turn to God
1. forgive my hidden faults—I want nothing to stand in the way
of our relationship
2. keep me from willful sin—deliberated rebellion
3. May they—willful sin—not rule over me.
4. then I will have peace—I will be blameless and innocent
C. Then we can truly worship God---v. 14
1. May what I express come from the heart made pure,
enlightened, truthful
2. May it please you: be a fragrant offering of praise and
devotion
3. This is a desire for, a plea for God’s presence in life
Concl.
1. A man turning to God—open, tender, willing & wanting to please with expressions of worship—is evidence of God’s loving action and the revelation of His glory
2. A converted heart at peace with his maker and Savior
