JOSEPH; A TYPE OF JESUS CHRIST--# 2 JN. 5:39 1-24-09
Today we’ll continue our look at Joseph, a son of Jacob and Rachel as an O.T. type of the Lord Jesus Christ. I personally think that Joseph is the best type & picture in the Bible of Jesus, the Saviour of the world, as far as a person is concerned.
Listen as I read today’s text found in
John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
Ø 1st of all, let me say that Joseph typified Christ in his name;
Gen.30:22-24 22And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb. 23And she conceived, and bare a son; and said, God hath taken away my reproach: 24And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD shall add to me another son.- “Joseph” [Hebrew adding]
The name “Jesus” means, Saviour, MATT. 1: 21-- and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
The ministry of Jesus would be a ministry of “adding too” All whom He saves are “subtracted” from the “sons of disobedience”
Ephesians 1:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
And “added” to the “sons of God”
John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Ø Joseph also typified Christ in being a shepherd; he was occupied in “feeding the flock.”
Genesis 37:2 --Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren;
Christ is the Shepherd of God’s sheep;
Psalm 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Isaiah 40:11 He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.
John 10:11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
1 Peter 2:25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
Ø Joseph typified Christ in testifying of the evil deeds of others; Joseph brought a bad report of [his sinful brothers] to his father.”
Genesis 37:2--and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.
Jesus Christ confessed, “I testify of [the world] that its works are evil”
John 7:7 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.
Ø Joseph typified Christ in being especially loved by his father ; “Israel loved Joseph more than all his children.”
Gen.37:3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age:
The Father loves Christ so much that of Him alone does He say,
Matthew 3:17 “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased”
Matt.17:5 5While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him
Ø Joseph typified Christ in his relation to his father’s age, we’re told that Joseph was a son of Jacobs old age in; Genesis 37:3
Jesus Christ is, in a manner of speaking, the Son of His Father’s old age, having been begotten by Him in eternity. Listen as I read you
Proverbs 8:22 –30 22The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. 23I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. 24When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. 25Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: 26While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. 27When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: 28When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: 29When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: 30Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight,
Psalm 2:7 I will declare the decree: the LORD* hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee
Ø Joseph typified Christ in being honored by his father through the presentation of a special coat.
Gen.37:3 --Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours
Christ was presented the garment of humanity in His incarnation.
Hebrews 10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
And Jesus has given you and I that are saved a new garment to wear.
Romans 13:12-- and let us put on the armour of light.
Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God,
Ø Joseph typified Christ in being hated by his brothers because of who he was.
Gen.37:4 “they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him” because they recognized him as their father’s favorite son.
Christ was also hated by His Jewish countrymen because of who He said He was: the co-equal and co-eternal Son of God.
John 5:18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
JN. 10:30-33 I and my Father are one. 31Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. 32Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? 33The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
Christ was hated by His Jewish countrymen because of what He said, especially the doctrine He said He received from God.
John 8:40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God:
Ø Joseph typified Christ in the prophecies God revealed regarding his future;
Gen. 37:5-10 5And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more. 6And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: 7For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field,* [MATT 13:38] and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.
8And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.
9And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.
10And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?
Joseph’s dreams foretold of his exaltation over all his family, which came to pass in Egypt.
Christ was prophesied to be exalted over all peoples;
Isaiah 9:6 -For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder:
The placing of Joseph in the pit - a type of death - and the lifting him out - a type of resurrection -
Genesis 37:23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat,
Jesus garment also was taken from Him.
Matthew 27:27-28 27Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers. 28And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
Ø Joseph was sold to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver.
Genesis 37: 28 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver:
Judas also sold Jesus for 30 pieces of silver:
Matthew 26:14-16 14Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, 15And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver. 16And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.
Ø And then we’re told that Joseph found favor in Pharaohs site, and he made him ruler over his house and put him in charge of all that he had.
Genesis 39: 4 And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
And to do with Jesus we read in;
John 3:35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.
Ø We’re also told that God blessed Pharaoh for Joseph’s sake.
Genesis 39: 5 And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake;
And we’re told why the God blesses us in,
Ephesians 4: 32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
Ø Then we find that Pharaoh was angry with two of his officials and put them in prison with Joseph.
Genesis 40: 1-3 And it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt. 2And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers. 3And he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound.
And then we are told about two thieves that are to be put to death with Jesus.
Luke 23: 32-33 And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death. 33And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
Ø We read that while Joseph was confined with the two officials of Pharaoh that both of them had a dream and Joseph intrepidity their dreams.
Genesis 40: 8-13 And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you. 9And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me; 10And in the vine were three branches: and it was as though it budded, and her blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes: 11And Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand. 12And Joseph said unto him, This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days: 13Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh’s cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler.
And then the chief bakers dream;
16-19 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said unto Joseph, I also was in my dream, and, behold, I had three white baskets on my head: 17And in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of bakemeats for Pharaoh; and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head. 18And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation thereof: The three baskets are three days: 19Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee. Lets notice that one was saved and the other lost.
Ø As the two thieves were hanging on the cross, one on the left of Jesus, the other on the right, one of them ask Jesus to remember him when Jesus came into His Kingdom, and Jesus said this in;
Luke 23: 43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
Ø Joseph said in;
Genesis 40: 15 For indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews: and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.
We read in;
Hebrews 4: 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
Ø We’re told that Joseph was 30 years old when he entered Pharaohs service.
Genesis 41: 46 And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt.
And we’re told that Jesus was about 30 years old when He began His ministry.
Luke 3: 23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age,
Ø Pharaoh told his servants to do what ever Joseph told them to do.
Genesis 41: 55 And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread: and Pharaoh said unto all the Egyptians, Go unto Joseph; what he saith to you, do.
And then we read about the 1st recorded miracle that Jesus did in the Gospel of John, and it was at a wedding.
John 2: 5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
