The Sons of God and the Daughters of Men
*****Genesis 6:1-8
Genesis 6:1 1And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
3And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
4There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of -[renown] -- authority, famous --
5And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
6And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
7And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
8But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD..
THERE ARE FOLKS, WHO WOULD HAVE US TO BELIEVE THAT THESE “SONS OF God” were angels.
~But as we get into this study we’ll see that, [the sons of God] are the believing dissidence of the Godly line of Seth, and that the [daughters of man] are the dissidence of the ungodly line of Cain~
~Let me remind us 1st of all that when Satan caused Adam & Eve to sin, God made Satan the promise that one day the seed of the woman would crush his head,
{Gen. 3:15} and from that point on Satan has been stabbing at the promised Redeemer, in trying to corrupt the blood line of Gods people, trying to destroy all godliness from mankind, and keep the Savior from being born.
~One of Satan’s most successful devices is compromise, he wants to delude God’s people into abandoning their privileged position of separation from sin, and then he can corrupt them and cause them to be ineffective for the cause of Christ.
The prophets warned the Jewish people not to compromise with the idolatrous worship of the pagans around them, but their warnings weren’t heeded; and the nation experienced shameful defeat at the hands of their enemies.
What was Satan’s plan for defeating God’s people in Noah’s day? To entice the godly line of Seth ("the sons of God} to mix with the ungodly line of Cain ("the daughters
of men") and thus abandon their devotion to the Lord. It was the same temptation that Christians face today: be friendly with the world James 4:4), love the world (1 John 2:15-17). and conform to the world (Rom. 12:2), rather man be separated from the world
(2 Cor. 6:14-7:1).
Of course, this could lead to being "condemned with the world" (1 Cor. 11:32). Lot
is an example of this danger (Gen.19).
~Some interpreters view Gen.6:1-7 as an invasion of fallen angels who cohabited with women and produced a race of giants.
But the theory creates more problems than it solves, one of which is the union of sexless spirit beings with flesh and blood humans.
---Just what exactly are angels anyway? ~~
Heb.1: 14Are they not all ministering spirits, [gods angels]sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?
The term "sons of God" does refer to angels in Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:7; but these are unfallen angels faithfully serving God.
~~In Gen. 18-19 we find three men coming to the House of Abraham, Lots uncle, One of the men was The Lord Jesus and the other two were two of His angels.
All three appeared as men.
The two angels were to go into Sodom and take Lot & his wife* and two daughters **[Ammonites-Moabites--] by the hand & safely lead them out of Sodom & then God would destroy it and surrounding other cities.-----called men, and also angels***---
Keep in mind that 1/3 **[REV.12:] of the angels in heaven believed the lie of Lucifer* and rebelled against God, and they were cast out of heaven with Satan and that’s how they wound up on the planet to start with.
JUDE 6And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
Sometime in the past they didn’t keep “their first estate.” God created angels with a free will. Angels do not reproduce as human beings do; therefore, they do not inherit a sinful nature as humans do.
Each angel was created by God with a free will. Some of these spiritual creatures were caught up in a rebellion, and now they are reserved in chains.
The fallen angels are divided into two groups. The group whose rebellion was so great is locked up, and has no freedom of movement any longer.
~~The other group of fallen angels apparently has freedom of movement and is under the leadership of Satan, these are the demons mentioned in Scripture and that are coming into prominence in our day.
~SO God has His angels and Satan has his;
Matt. 25: 41Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
2nd pet.2:4For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell,* [tartarus]and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;
Furthermore, the emphasis in Genesis 6 is sin of man and not the rebellion of angels.
The word [man] is used nine times in verses Gen.6: 1-7, and God states clearly that
Judgment was coming because of what humans had done, not what angels have done.
The word "giants" in Genesis 6:4 is a translation of the Hebrew word nephilim which means "fallen ones.
The interpretation of Genesis 6:4 is that God saw the people of that day as "fallen ones," while men saw these people as mighty leaders.
Even today, much of what is admired by the world is rejected by the Lord .
~~~When the Sethites compromised by mingling with the Cainites, they fell from God’s blessing.
God was grieved that they married godless Cainites, choosing wives as they
pleased without considering God’s will (Gen. 6:2).
In doing this, they endangered the fulfillment of the Gen.3: 15 promise; how could God bring a Redeemer into the world through unholy people?
The people of that day "married and was given in marriage" (Matt. 24:37-39)
Human history was now at the place where only Noah and his family—eight people—believed God and obeyed His Word.
God’s Spirit was striving with lost people but they resisted the call of God; and God was grieved.
Man’s wickedness was great, ever imagination of all his thoughts was only evil continually, so it was no surprise that God chose to send judgment.
The only way people can be saved from God’s wrath is through God’s grace (Eph. 2:8-9); but grace isn’t God’s reward for a good life: it’s God’s response to saving faith. "By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his house" (Heb. 11:7,).
True faith involves the whole of the inner person:--- the mind understands God’s
warning, --the heart fears for what is coming, ---and the will acts in obedience to God’s Word.
God is long-suffering toward lost sinners, but there comes a time when judgment must fall.
During that "day of grace," Noah prepared the ark and gave witness that judgment was coming (2 Peter 2:5 5And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;),
The same message Enoch had given during his lifetime (Jude 14-15 14And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,
15To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him).
God gave His message in the mouth of two witnesses, [ENOCH-NOAH] but the people wouldn’t listen.
Genesis 6:1 1And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
SO The offspring here were men; they were not demon monstrosities.
2That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
The sons of God (that is, the professors of true religion, who were called by the name of the Lord, and called upon the name of the LORD, married the daughters of men, that is, those that were profane, and strangers to God and godliness.
The dissidence of Seth did not keep by themselves as they ought to have done, for the preservation of their own purity, and to be in protest of the apostasy, and to ensure the purity of the blood line of the PROMISED REDEEMER. –GEN.3:15] They intermingled themselves with the excommunicated race of Cain:
They took them wives of all that they chose. What was wrong in these marriages?
~ They chose only by the eye: They saw that they were fair, which was all they looked at
~They followed the choice, which their own corrupt affections made:
-They took all that they chose, without advice and consideration.
They were unequally yoked with unbelievers, 2 Co. 6:14. This was forbidden to Israel, Deu. 7:3, 4.
4There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of -[renown] -- authority, famous –
It says, “There were giants in the earth in those days,” but it does not say they are the offspring of the sons of God and the daughters of men.
It does say this about the offspring: “the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.” These were not monstrosities; they were men.
5And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
There are four words here that ought to be emphasized “The wickedness of man was great.” “Every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil.” Only evil—that is all it was—and that “continually.”
These four words reveal the condition of the human family that was upon the earth.
Prov. 29:16, When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increaseth.
===So evil had men become by the days of Noah that it repented the Lord that, he had made man on the earth.
The word repented does not mean that God made a mistake in His dealings with men, but rather indicates a change in divine direction resulting from the actions of man.
~~The more sinners the more sin; and the multitude of offenders cause bad results on every body that’s near by.
Infectious diseases are most destructive in populated cities; and sin is a spreading leprosy. ====
Large families need to be well governed, lest they become wicked families.
Unlike people, angels don’t have blind desires tempting them from unseen sources.
** Angels don’t have the power to create nor do they have the power to procreate. Only God has the power to create life.**
. Matthew 22:22-30 23The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him, 24Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. 25Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother: 26Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh. 27And last of all the woman died also. 28Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her. 29Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. 30For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven
Sexual union is unique to physical creation and is temporary. When we live in our glorified bodies, we will no longer have these needs & desires.
Angels can not procreate. They don’t marry nor are given in marriage, yet the passage in Genesis says the sons of God took wives.
Therefore “the sons of God” could not have been angels. Neither do Angels have the power to create life.
People certainly are involved in the physical aspect of procreation, but only God can create life.
Listen to these verses:
Exodus 4:11 11And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?
Psalm 139:1313For thou hast possessed [my reins:]-inward parts- thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. 14I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
