“Nothing But the Truth”
Exodus 20:16
* The “minister wound up the services one morning by saying, "Next Sunday I am going to preach on the subject of LIARS. And in this connection, I would like you all to read the 17th chapter of Mark." The next Sunday, the preacher rose to begin, and said, "Now, all of you who have done as I requested and read the 17th chapter of Mark, please raise your hands." Nearly every hand in the congregation went up. "Very good," said the preacher. "You are precisely the people I wish to speak to this morning. There IS no 17th chapter of Mark!"
* On the witness stand you are asked for “nothing but the truth”.
* Tonight, let’s visit the 9th Commandment. Read text.
* Of All Commands, this is routinely “winked” at, this one leads the list. Speaking of lists, I have a list of;

* In 1999 Deb and I were on a Christian cruise. If you remember, this was right after the debacle in the White house. Dr. John McArthur preached a message about “lying leaders,” and named Bill Clinton specifically. It seems to me that it is no accident that following 8 years of a president who had great PR skills and little ethics that we suffered the humiliation of MCI & Enron. George Barna wrote the eye-opening report entitled “the day America told the truth.” According to surveys, 91% lie about “little” things while 36% lie about significant things. Lying is seemingly an epidemic.
* The Bible is clear, lying is a sin. Let’s divide our thinking in three thoughts & unpack this truth..
1) THE TEACHING ABOUT LYING
* We know that lying begins at birth as a part of our sin nature. (Ps 58:3) No matter how cute our children are, we know that they very quickly begin to lie and have to be taught to tell the truth. (Psa 51:5) In Rom 3:4, the Bible teaches us that every man is a liar & that God is truth. Lying does 3 things:
a) Breaks God’s Law – his is the 9th Commandment. The wording gives a picture of a Court Room setting. In a court proceeding you are sworn to give the “truth, the whole truth & nothing but the truth so help you God.” Have you ever wondered why this wording is used? Every society recognizes the need for truth, not partial truths, not half truths, not embellished truths, to understand any situation the truth must be complete. In court, the judge expects the truth and you’ll be charged with perjury if you give anything less or more than the truth.
* Every day you and I live in God’s court room and we live according to His law. He swears you in every morning and listens to us throughout the day.
* The interesting to me is that we consider seriously the breaking of man’s laws and then with little thought we break God’s laws. Here is what it seems; that the prevailing attitude is that God is loving, forgiving, & filled with mercy, so He’ll let us off the hook. I’ll offer Adam & Even as exhibit A.
b) Breaks God’s Word –
* Proverbs 19:9, “A false witness will not go unpunished, & he who pours out lies will perish.”
* Proverbs 16:13, “Kings take pleasure in honest lips; they value a man who speaks the truth.”
* Never forget, God’s word is all about TRUTH.
* Isaiah 65:16, “Whoever invokes a blessing in the land will do so by the God of truth; he who takes an oath in the land will swear by the God of truth. For the past troubles will be forgotten and hidden from my eyes.”
* God’s word, His character, His calling is to truth. He is not truthful, He IS truth. Don’t forget, “You shall know the truth….”
c) Breaks God’s Heart – This thought takes no thought
* Just like your child breaks your heart when they don’t follow your words, so it is true with God. Do you suppose that the reason for 9th Command is that God is already sick of lies? Think about it, the serpent, Abraham, Sarah, Jacob, Laban, Joseph’s Brothers, Potiphar’s wife, Judah, and this is just the one’s I can think of. It breaks God’s heart when His people, created in His image (of truth), His own crown creation, resort to deceit, deceitfulness, and dishonesty. By the way, there is not one example of any good coming from a lie. God desires that we tell the truth.
2) THE TROUBLE FROM LYING –reveals 3 things:
a) Depravity – nothing shows my depravity like lying. It reveals my corruptness & demonstrates that I have little or no conscience. In Ps 62:4 it talks about the man who “takes delight in lies.” Proverbs 26:28 tells us that, “A lying tongue hates those it hurts, and a flattering mouth works ruin.” Our mouth reveals our depravity. Romans 1 will teach us much.
b) Darkness – consider real darkness. Makes you think you can get away with evil because no one can see. Lying is worse kind of darkness. Psalms 78:35-37 “They remembered that God was their Rock, that God Most High was their Redeemer. But then they would flatter him with their mouths, lying to him with their tongues; their hearts were not loyal to him, they were not faithful to his covenant.
* All through the Bible darkness is synonymous with lostness. The habitual liar is literally lost.
c) Deception – How many times, how many place, & by how many ways are we given this message, “Be not deceived.” From the myriad of warning it is obvious that God knew we are given to be deceived. Relating to lying and deception watch;
* Psalms 12:2 Every one lies to his neighbor; their flattering lips speak with deception.
* Proverbs 17:4 A wicked man listens to evil lips; a liar pays attention to a malicious tongue.
* A lying tongue is a double-edged sword. It begins with deceiving others with your words & ends up deceiving yourself with your heart.
3) THE TREATMENT FOR LYING – we must understand
a) THE Source – John 8:44 “you belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
* Make no mistake from Garden to the “days of your lives” all lies are from Satan and all liars (habitual) are controlled by Him. Let me give you a couple of the lies He’s giving.
* God is a “KILL-JOY” & doesn’t want us to enjoy life. He is out to kill our fun. It’s like the world found out about fun without God.
* “World’s Opinion is more important than God” We need to seriously consider that this is like saying “a drug pusher wants more for you than your parents.”
b) The Seriousness – God takes all of His law serious.
* Proverbs 6:16-18 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil,
* Proverbs 12:19-22 Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment. There is deceit in the hearts of those who plot evil, but joy for those who promote peace. No harm befalls the righteous, but the wicked have their fill of trouble. The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful.
* Revelation 21:8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars-their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."
* This is a matter of the Heart because Matt 6:45 says, “out of the heart, the mouth speaks.” Lying lips reveal a deceptive heart.
c) Solution – Step one is to “hear the scripture”
* Psalms 31:18 Let their lying lips be silenced,for with pride and contempt they speak arrogantly against the righteous.
* 1 John 4:20 If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.
* Proverbs 4:23-24 above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
* Ephesians 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
* Realize that lying in every form is a sin and offensive to God. Realize that Jesus is the truth. Remember John 14:6
CONCL: This world is cold and hard. Make no mistake we will have be pressured is to become “liars.” Let us remember that Paul writes to Timothy words that will be good for us, “be an example in word.” James says, “No man can tame the tongue.” I’ll submit there is only one man, “Christ & Christ alone”
