Summary: Jesus did not come just to keep us from burning in hell. He said, "I came that they may have life and have it abundantly" (John 10:10). Many believers live as orphans, not sons and daughters of the King.

POSSESSING OUR POSSESSIONS

Obadiah vv. 15-17

I. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

A. Israel had failed to value the blessings of God, resulting in sin and captivity, and others taking possession of their land.

B. Edom (Esau), the brother of Israel, stood by while Israel was plundered (vv. 19-14).

C. Though they lived in a mighty stronghold, God would bring Edom down (vv. 1-9).

D. The situation would be reversed, with Israel holding the upper hand (vv. 15-21).

THE REST OF THE STORY

A. Believers have come to Mount Zion and the heavenly Jerusalem (Heb 12:18-24).

B. Do we have some possessions that we are not possessing?

1. Possessing “These Things” of Romans 8:31:

a. In Christ Jesus, there is no condemnation (vv. 1-2. Notice how Paul returns to this thought in verses 33-34.)

b. God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit indwell us (vv. 9-11).

c. We are not left as orphans (vv. 15-17; John 14:18).

d. There is a future glory which encompasses the redemption of the body (vv. 18-25).

e. The Holy Spirit makes intercession for us (vv. 26-27).

2. Possessing the “All Things” of Romans 8:32:

a. God justifies us (vv.. 32-33).

b. Christ makes intercession for us (v.34; 1 John 2:1-2).

c. We are more than conquerors through Jesus (vv. 35-37).

d. We are cradled in the love of God and Christ (vv. 38-39).

CONCLUSION

A. "For of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'" (John Greenleaf Whittier's poem "Maud Muller).

B. How sad that many Christians live as street urchins when our Father is a King.
