Pick Up the Oil and Anoint Somebody!

2 Kings 9:1-7 (King James Version) Pastor Ken Crow

2 Kings 9

1And Elisha the prophet called one of the children of the prophets, and said unto him, Gird up thy loins, and take this box of oil in thine hand, and go to Ramothgilead:

2And when thou comest thither, look out there Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi, and go in, and make him arise up from among his brethren, and carry him to an inner chamber;

3Then take the box of oil, and pour it on his head, and say, Thus saith the LORD, I have anointed thee king over Israel. Then open the door, and flee, and tarry not.

4So the young man, even the young man the prophet, went to Ramothgilead.

5And when he came, behold, the captains of the host were sitting; and he said, I have an errand to thee, O captain. And Jehu said, Unto which of all us? And he said, To thee, O captain.

6And he arose, and went into the house; and he poured the oil on his head, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I have anointed thee king over the people of the LORD, even over Israel.

7And thou shalt smite the house of Ahab thy master, that I may avenge the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the LORD, at the hand of Jezebel.

1. This Son of one of the prophets had stood on the bank of the Jordan River and watched from afar as the double portion anointing fell upon Elisha.

2 Kings 2:7 (King James Version)

7And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan.

In fact they followed Elijah and Elisha every where they went in the journey to Elisha’s double portion anointing.

They followed from Gilgal to Bethel. They were at Jericho They were at at The Jordan River.

But only to watch. Only to observe. They had even from appearances tried to discourage Elisha along the way by taunting about his teacher , his mentor was leaving.

But now for one of these that was about to change! Elisha hands him a box of oil and says gird up your loins my son . You are about to do something for God. Your time on the side line is up.

In Hebrews chapter 5: 12-14 the writer most likely Paul addresses the Hebrew church for their tendency to stay on the side lines.

Hebrews 5:12-14 (King James Version)

12For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

13For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

14But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil

Where will we be this time next year? Where will I be as a disciple this time next year.

Where will we be as a church this time next year?

Jesus sent the oil in the Holy Ghost. It is time for some of us to pick up that oil and become anointers!

I am going to preach pretty hard right now and I will do it because I love you so much as to see you sit on the sidelines and not ever reach what God has for you to do.

If we have a tendency to get offended at things we are not yet anointers.

If we can’t find it within ourselves to give to the kingdom of God we not anointers!

If coming to the house of God is a chore than we are not anointers!

If we can not get behind and encourage someone else we are not anointers!

WE CANNOT TRANSFER SOMETHING WE DO NOT HAVE OURSELVES!

2. Take it! 1And Elisha the prophet called one of the children of the prophets, and said unto him, Gird up thy loins, and take this box of oil in thine hand, and go to Ramothgilead:

A. Gird up thy loins . When you get ready to transfer something to someone else look out!

b. Take this box of oil! Elisha extended it out toward him but this son of the prophet had to take it! Elisha said “in your hand”!

c. And go to Ramothgilead! When we take the anointing it is onlyfor one reason.

It is not to become famous!

It is not for us to be held up and patted on the back and say lookwhat I can do!
