I. EXORDIUM:
Are you like CHRIST?
II. AUDIENCE PROFILE:
Believers
III. OBJECTIVES:
To show in life of Phinehas, that CHRIST is already glorified, so like us, we need to glorify CHRIST in our lives.
IV. TEXT:
1 Chronicles 9:20 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Phinehas son of Eleazar had been in charge of the gatekeepers in earlier times, and the Lord had been with him.
V. THESIS:
Be like CHRIST, the Glorifier of GOD.
VI. TITLE:
Phinehas son of Eleazar
VII. EXPLICATION:
A. Author: uncertain
B. Time of writing: Probably written during or shortly after the Captivity.
C. Function: supplementary to 1&2 Samuel and 1&2 Kings.
D. Distinctive feature: deals almost exclusively with the history of Judah.
E. Central thought: Sovereignty of GOD
VIII. MAIN BODY:
A. In charge of the gatekeepers
1. His physical reputation:
a. grandson of Aaron, son of Eleazar
Exodus 6:25 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Eleazar son of Aaron married one of the daughters of Putiel, and she gave birth to his son, Phinehas. These are the ancestors of the Levite families, listed according to their clans.
Numbers 25:7-9 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
When Phinehas son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron the priest saw this, he jumped up and left the assembly. He took a spear
and rushed after the man into his tent. Phinehas thrust the spear all the way through the man’s body and into the woman’s stomach. So the plague against the Israelites was stopped,
but not before 24,000 people had died.
When GOD's people are crying out loud, Phinehas took action. There are times that you stop crying like a cry baby, be brokenness or in broken mode, most of the time, it's already within us, given by the HOLY SPIRIT to do what needs to be done.
b. a victorious warrior of the LORD - his weapons are spiritual - holy objects of the sanctuary and trumpets
Numbers 31:6 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Then Moses sent them out, 1,000 men from each tribe, and Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest led them into battle. They carried along the holy objects of the sanctuary and the trumpets for sounding the charge.
2 Corinthians 10:4 (New International Version)
The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.
Our weapons are not like the weapons of this world. We carry in our bodies, the HOLY SPIRIT, and we have the WORD OF GOD in our minds, hearts, and soul.
B. The LORD was with Phinehas
1. a great spiritual leader
Joshua 22:13 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
First, however, they sent a delegation led by Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, to talk with the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
Judges 20:28 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
and Phinehas son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron was the priest.) The Israelites asked the Lord, “Should we fight against our relatives from Benjamin again, or should we stop?” The Lord said, “Go! Tomorrow I will hand them over to you.”
2. A type of CHRIST
a. Made atonement for Israel
Psalms 106:30-31 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
But Phinehas had the courage to intervene, and the plague was stopped.
So he has been regarded as a righteous man ever since that time.
Since he's a grandson of Aaron, then he's in line for the high priesthood of GOD. His job is a spiritual job, to make atonement for GOD's people. He stopped the plague, in essence defeated death on the Israelite's behalf, like our LORD JESUS CHRIST who made atonement for us with His blood, and defeated death on our behalf. But unlike CHRIST, Phinehas came out with a spear but our LORD JESUS CHRIST came out in love to save us not to judge us.
b. his priesthood is permanent like CHRIST.
1 Chronicles 6:49 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Only Aaron and his descendants served as priests. They presented the offerings on the altar of burnt offering and the altar of incense, and they performed all the other duties related to the Most Holy Place. They made atonement for Israel by doing everything that Moses, the servant of God, had commanded them. Like CHRIST, Phinehas' priesthood gives him permanent right, like CHRIST his priesthood is in the order of Melchizedek not of the levites.
1 Chronicles 15:26 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
And because God was clearly helping the Levites as they carried the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant, they sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams.
Numbers 25:13 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
In this covenant, I give him and his descendants a permanent right to the priesthood, for in his zeal for me, his God, he purified the people of Israel, making them right with me.”
