Peace

A Funeral Message

John 14:27

Intro.

We are here today to accomplish three things

-Remember a life that was lived

-Offer our comfort and support to the family and

each other.

-Consider our own immortality in the face of

death.

In the final hours of His time on earth Jesus offered these words to his disciples.

-It was a time of sorrow

-It was a time of confusion

-It was a time of departure

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Jesus speaks of peace

I. Peace supplied.

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you”

-Jesus promised to leave us peace.

-It was HIS peace

-It is perfect peace

Isaiah 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

A. His peace is supplied by His Presence.

Psalms 4:8 I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.

B. His peace is supplied by His Power.

-By his power He stilled the troubled sea.

Mark 4:39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

-By His power He can bring peace to a troubled heart.

John 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

C. His peace is supplied through prayer

-Philippians 4:6-7 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God .And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

D. His Peace is supplied to you by His Promise (I give)

II. Peace Implied.

“Not as the World giveth”

The world’s peace is only and an implied or suggested peace, it is not genuine.

A. The world’s peace is temporal

-It does not last.

-God’s peace is eternal.

B. The world’s peace is superficial.

-It applies only to the mind.

-God’s peace applies down deep into the heart.

“Let not your heart be troubled”

C. The world’s peace is artificial

-Sometime is comes from alcohol or taking pills.

-It gives us a sense of peace that is not real.

-It is born in escapism rather than reality

-God’s peace is real and can be realized as we depend on Him.

D. The world’s peace is fragile.

-It is broken quickly and easily

-God’s peace is built on the foundation of His own character and attributes.

III. Peace applied.

“Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let it be afraid”

A. God peace is applied to our hearts.

-The place that is in turmoil.

-The place were we hurt

B. God’s peace is applied by faith.

John 14:1 Let not your hearts be troubled, ye believe in God, believe also in me.

-Faith in the Creator

-Faith in Christ

--Faith in Christ brings eternal life.

1 John 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

(Gospel)

-Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

Are you trusting in Him?

-Faith in Christ brings eternal peace.

C. God’s peace will bring us….

-Strength

Psalms 29:11 The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace.

-Comfort

--He comforts the troubled heart

--He calms the troubled heart

Conclusion:

Seek the Lord and His peace

Numbers 6:24-26

The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:

The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:

The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

Excellent funeral message for servants of God when the person being buried is not known.
