Part 2 - Genesis 14:17-24 - Tithing Without A Gun Held To My Head Series

Summary: "Paying tithes? That's UNDER THE OLD TESTAMENT LAW. It just doesn't apply today." Someone draws out Genesis 14:17-24 from it's holster like a Colt Peacemaker six-gun and recites "ABRAHAM PAID TITHES 500 YEARS BEFORE THE LAW!" but was it an imaginary gun?
DID ABRAM GIVE TITHES REGULARLY? NO! This is the ONLY RECORDED TIME that Abraham EVER GAVE A TITHE and Abraham LIVED 160 YEARS.
This is a ONCE OFF OFFERING, not a normal tithe, specifically related to HIS VICTORY. This was NOT AN ANNUAL TITHE to Melchizedek, or a WEEKLY TITHE. There is NO RECORD that Abraham EVER TITHED AGAIN.
It was TOTALLY VOLUNTARY, totally motivated by his HEART ATTITUDE, NOT BECAUSE GOD COMMANDED IT, because up until this time in Genesis there is NO COMMAND to TITHE.
So the first principle concerning TITHING that the Bible speaks about is NOT LEGALISM. What a beautiful way to introduce the concept of tithing. It comes from the heart
It seems to me that it is SIMPLY THIS...
1. TITHING DECLARES THAT GOD IS MY KING and if for NO OTHER REASON I tithe BUT TO DECLARE GOD IS MY KING, then for me that's more than enough reason.
2. TITHING IS A CELEBRATION OF VICTORY THAT I HAVE IN CHRIST.
3. TITHING COMES AS A RESPONSE OF MY HEART TO GIVE TO GOD'S KINGDOM PURPOSES.
3. TITHING DECLARES I TRUST AND DEPEND ON GOD WHO PROVIDES FOR ME AND CARES FOR ME.
God bless you Church as you tithe from your heart to recognise God as your King. As you come under His authority may your generosity overflow into the lives of others as you declare the victory you have in Christ, just as Abram did long ago.
