Message Point: Get your life right with Jesus before the Judgment.
Focus Passage: Hebrews 9:27-28
Supplemental Passage: For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11)
Introduction: We’ve all seen big companies or rich people “settle out of court.” This means that they knew that they were liable for damages of some kind, and rather than leave the results up to a jury, they decide to offer the victim compensation away from the judges, jury, and legal system. The results are often secretive to try to hide how much they paid. They usually end up paying a whole lot less than the jury would have awarded them.
I. We are Guilty of Sin
a. for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (Romans 3:23 NASB)
b. If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. (1 John 1:8 NASB)
c. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us. (1 John 1:10 NASB)
II. The Wages of Sin is Death
a. For the wages of sin is death... (Romans 6:23a NASB)
b. Sin? What sin?
i. "You have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.' "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell. (Matthew 5:21-22 NASB)
ii. Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21)
c. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:14-15 NASB)
III. Settle Up with Jesus before the Judgment
a. … but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23b NASB)
b. But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. (Romans 6:22 NASB)
c. He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB)
d. so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:10-11 NASB)
e. "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.' (Matthew 7:22-23 NASB)
Application/Invitation: Have you made your peace with God through Jesus? Have you settled your account before being judged? Is your name written in the Book of Life? Have you been born again? Perhaps you have been reconciled to God, but you are taking advantage of your forgiveness. Romans 6:1-2 says, “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?” Romans 6:14-15 says, “For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be!” Let’s all take care of these things today.
