I. The Promise

A. Jesus gave his word that they were to go to the other side.

1. Earlier in the chapter Jesus teaches on the how important the Word of God is by using the parable of the sower and the reaper.

B. Throughout Scripture we find the fulfillment of the promises of God. (Examples)

C. The Bible is a book of promises to those that will believe.

1. Galatians 3:29 And if ye [be] Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

II. The Storm.

A. The Purpose of the Storm is to get you to take your eyes off the Word and unto the situation. Putting you into a battle between the flesh and faith.

1. Galatians 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

2. It is during this battle that you have to overcome the temptations of the flesh and allow faith to carry you through.

3. This is a battle between faith and fear.

B. Fear brings with it anxiety, depression, doubt, and unbelief. Luke 21:25 …; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; …; (26) Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

1. Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places].

2. 2 Corinthians 10:3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (4) (For the weapons of our warfare [are] not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds ;) (5) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

3. Psalms 91:4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth [shall be thy] shield and buckler. (5)Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; [nor] for the arrow [that] flieth by day;

4. Isaiah 43:2 When thou passest through the waters, I [will be] with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

5. John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

6. Romans 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

7. Psalms 46:1 God [is] our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

8. John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world

9. Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. (6) In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

10. Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

11. Romans 8:37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. (38) For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, (39) Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

12. 1 Peter 1:13 ¶ Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

13. 2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

14. Psalms 145:14 The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all [those that be] bowed down. (15) The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season. (16) Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing. (17) The LORD [is] righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works. (18) The LORD [is] nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. (19) He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.
