ON THE EDGE: WHERE ADVENTURE MEETS COURAGE
July 30, 2006 Jay Robison 1 CHRONICLES 28:20-21
We have had a great VBS week
Averaged 305 at TBC and satellite sites
Theme has been on the edge where adventure meets courage
Like that theme for a several reasons
Believe life is to be an adventure, always something new
Living today takes courage, been talking a lot about that
Recognize to make a difference will require being on the edge
What is the most impossible thing you have ever had to do?
Raising kids, taking on a new job, loving someone unlovable
Facing cancer, losing weight, getting money in line
All have an adventure before us where we need courage
Imagine if you had to build a house for God
Would you be up to it? PwPt slides renditions of temple
That is exactly what Solomon character in 1 Chr 28 had to do
Vs 20-21 King David his father tells him it’s your job
Temple is place where God speaks, dwells, reassured people
Solomon taking over for David who began planning temple
Imagine the fear and dread as Solomon was told he would have
responsibility for building the temple according to plans
David gives him some advice for the adventure ahead
Feel it is advice you and I could use
As we attempt to take courage in the adventure before us
1. Get to KNOW GOD PERSONALLY
If Solomon was going to make it through this project
Needed to know he was not alone
Each generation is challenged to live out their faith
With ever-renewed commitment to God
“As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, & serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts.. . .1 Chronicles 28:9 NKJV
Underline KNOW, means an intimate, personal knowledge
LOYAL HEART undivided, and WILLING MIND ready
God knows our intentions and our thoughts, scary
Rom 11:22 NLT warning Notice how God is both kind & severe. He is severe to those who disobeyed, but kind to you as you continue to trust in his kindness. But if you stop trusting, you will be cut off.
Instead: Fill your mind with the thought that God is there
Remember God knows all about this!
Things we are most worried about today, God knows Things outside of our control that effect us God knows Things we have not begun to consider, God knows
If we take time to re-center myself in the Spirit asking He come into my mind and heart - peace follows. Often the situation remains exactly the same, but I am changed.
2. Look for GOD’S CALL ON YOUR LIFE
God has a plan for each and every life
You are not an accident, you are not a mistake
God has a plan for your life
Solomon, you must understand this. The LORD has chosen you to build the Temple as his holy place. Be strong and finish the job.” 1 Chron 28:10 NCV
Specific tasks, building temple was not a job for David to do though David began planning for it God said not for you to do God called Solomon to do it
What has God chosen for you to do?
Lois Brooke told of fitting folks w\hearing aids as a calling Almost apologized for it, NO God calls everyone to something What is your calling?
God has given you natural abilities, experiences, education, a passion for certain things, as well as opportunity in r-ships
On Church’s website spiritual gifts inventory, to help you see
What is your spiritual calling? Jesus wants everyone in family, “not willing for any to perish” Desires all to be part of local body of believers, in church TBC exists to LOVE like Christ
3. Follow THE INSTUCTIONS
When God places a calling on our lives, God also has a plan God has plans for how you and I are to live Solomon became king he young God said give you anything Solomon said give me wisdom to be good king rewarded
God challenged Solomon to follow instructions all the commands Now, my son, may the LORD be w\you; & may you prosper, & build the house of the LORD your God, as He has said to you. Only may the LORD give you wisdom and understanding, & give you charge concerning Israel, that you may keep the law of the LORD your God. Then you will prosper, if you take care to fulfill the statutes & judgments w\which the LORD charged Moses concerning Israel. Be strong and of good courage; do not fear nor be dismayed. 1 Chronicles 22:11-13 NKJV
