Series: Called To Promise [#16]
OBEDIENT SACRIFICE
Genesis 22:1-24
Introduction:
Genesis 22 is one of those stories that makes you stop and think, “Would I be willing to do that?” It’s about Abraham being asked by God to sacrifice his most precious thing- His son Isaac. Now, I know what you’re thinking- That sounds extreme; but what it teaches us is about trusting God even when things don’t make sense. Because at the end of the day, obedience isn’t about blindly following rules; it’s about trusting that God's plan is bigger and better than anything we could imagine. As Charles Spurgeon put it, “Obedience is the very door through which the grace of God enters into our hearts.” Today, we’ll explore how obedience in sacrifice is a demonstration of trust, surrender, preparedness for divine provision, and a legacy for future generations.
In a World obsessed with having control and doing things our own way, the call to obey God can seem counterintuitive; but the truth is, obedience is where faith becomes real. It’s about saying, “God, I trust You more than I trust my own understanding.” Sometimes that means giving up what’s comfortable or familiar. Sometimes it means risking it all- Like Abraham did; but the promise is that when we step out in obedience, God shows up in powerful ways. Think of this story as a blueprint for us- An invitation to trust God fully, surrender everything, and see how He provides in ways we couldn’t have planned ourselves.
Genesis 22:1-2
Obedient sacrifice…
1. Demonstrates absolute trust in God.
When God told Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac, Abraham’s first response was trust- No questions, no hesitation. Genesis 22:1-2 shows us that Abraham’s trust was so deep that he obeyed, even when it was painful and confusing. He believed that God's promises were sure, and that God’s plans for him were good, even if that meant losing what he loved most. Trust like that isn’t built overnight; it’s a daily choice to believe that God's way is better than ours.
Abraham’s trust wasn’t just a feeling; it was action. He got up early, prepared everything, and headed to the mountain. That’s real faith- Trusting God enough to act on it; and here’s the thing- Trusting God in the hard times is what separates superficial faith from genuine, life-changing trust. As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” Abraham took that first step, and God proved Himself faithful. Trust like this isn’t just for Bible stories- It’s for us today, in our own struggles and uncertainties.
When we face moments of doubt or fear, our response reveals what we truly believe about God. Do we trust that His plans are good? Do we believe He’s able to turn even our hardest moments into something beautiful? Obedient sacrifice begins with trusting that God’s character is trustworthy, even when we can’t see the full picture. It’s about leaning into His promises and trusting that He’s working everything out for our good.
Genesis 22:3-12
Obedient sacrifice…
2. Reflects total surrender to God's will.
Genesis 22:3-12 paints a picture of Abraham’s complete surrender. He didn’t argue or try to negotiate with God; he simply obeyed. Abraham’s willingness to give up his son, the heir of God’s promise, shows us what it means to surrender everything- Our plans, our hopes, our most loved possessions. When Abraham built the altar and laid Isaac on it, he was saying, “God, I trust You more than I trust my own plans.” That’s surrender- Letting go of our own way and trusting God’s plan, even when it hurts.
Surrendering to God isn’t always easy. It’s a daily decision to say, “Not my will, but Yours be done.” Jesus echoed this in Luke 9:23 when He said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily.” Surrendering means putting aside our pride, our fears, and our attachment to control. It’s about saying, “God, I’m Yours, no matter what.” That kind of surrender isn’t a one-time event; it’s a lifestyle- A continuous choice to trust and obey.
Here’s the good news- When we surrender, we make space for God to do something incredible. Abraham’s willingness to surrender Isaac opened the door for God to provide a ram in the thicket. Our surrender can do the same- It clears the way for God’s provision, His blessing, and His divine intervention. Sometimes, surrendering means giving up what we think we need, trusting that God will come through in His perfect timing. It’s about trusting that His plans are better than ours, even when it’s hard to see the end from the beginning.
Genesis 22:13-14
Obedient sacrifice…
3. Prepares the way for God's provision.
When Abraham was ready to sacrifice Isaac, God stepped in at the last second and provided a ram caught in the thicket. Genesis 22:13-14 shows us that God was already preparing a solution before Abraham even knew what he needed. This pattern repeats throughout Scripture: obedience often precedes divine provision. When we step out in faith, God steps in with what we need- Sometimes in ways we never expected.
