Summary: O God Our Rock
Psalm 140 O God Our Rock
1. The Source of the Deliverance
It's Powerful - A Divine Deliverance - 1 Deliver me, O Lord,
It's Personal - A Direct Deliverance - 1 Deliver me,
It's Possible - A Dynamic Deliverance - O Lord,
It's Practical - A Definite Deliverance - from the evil man:
2. The Sincerity of the Desire - 1 preserve me from the violent man;
A Desire -
For Salvation - preserve me,
For Separation - protect me
For Sanctification - purify me
3. The Severity of the Danger - 1 preserve me from the violent man;
The Vile, The Vicious, The Vexatious and The Violent Man.
4. The Scope of the Deceit -
Its in -
Their Hearts - 2 which imagine mischiefs in their heart;
It's Covered, Continual, and Contentious.
Their Homes - continually are they gathered together for war.
Their Heads - 3 They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent;
adders’ poison is under their lips. Selah.
Their Spite, Their Speech, Their Spoil.
Their Hands - 4 Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked;
preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.
Violent Hands, Vicious Hands, Vindictive Hands, Vengeful Hands.
Their Hopes - 5 The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords;
they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah.
Their Pride - 5 The proud,
Their Plot - have hid a snare
Their Prize - for me,
Their Provision - and cords;
Their Place - they have spread a net by the wayside;
Their Purpose - they have set gins for me. Selah. (Plural)
5. The Surety of the Defence
A Special Defence - 6 I said unto the Lord, Thou art my God:
A Spiritual Defence - hear the voice of my supplications, O Lord.
A Specific Defence - 7 O God the Lord,
A Strong Defence - the strength of my salvation,
A Sure Defence - thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.
A Spoiling Defence -
8 Grant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device;
A Scattering Defence - lest they exalt themselves. Selah.
6. The Simplicity of the Design
For Justice - 9 As for the head of those that compass me about,
let the mischief of their own lips cover them.
For Judgment - 10 Let burning coals fall upon them:
let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again
For Justification - 11 Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth:
evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.
7. The Certainty of the Delight
The Assertion - 12 I know
The Assurance - that the Lord
The Assistance - will maintain the cause of the afflicted,
The Association - and the right of the poor.
The Aspiration - 13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name
The Assimilation - the upright shall dwell in thy presence.
