Contributed by Randy Christensen on Nov 25, 2005 (message contributor)
Summary: Edmund’s selfish choices enslaved him to the White Witch. He could only be set free by the Lion’s sacrifice, and a personal encounter with Aslan.
Introduction:
…there was a land that existed where a horrible evil ruler had come and taken over the land…
…she knew that 4 children…2 sons of Adam and 2 daughters of Eve were to rule in the land…
she met one—Edmund—whom she tempted
Powerpoint of Edmund and witch
…Turkish delight …he wanted more and more… selfish/greedy …because of his greed/selfishness he chose to serve the witch
*Video clip: (from Wonderworks -Public Media Video - The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) Edmund speaking to the witch in her castle.
#1. the result of selfishness/sin: Edmund realized that his selfishness had now betrayed his family, and may kill him…
Romans 3:23 “All have sinned…”
Romans 6:23 “The wages of sin is death…”
Edmund was in big trouble…by following the witch, he had placed her in charge! He was stuck…and death as a result was a reality.
#2. Slavery - Romans 6:16 “Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?
The disobedience of Adam brought death…and put Satan in charge
The disobedience of Edmund would bring death…and put the white witch in charge
OUR own disobedience will bring spiritual death…and puts Satan in charge…
#3. Payment/Sacrifice - BUT there was one thing that could be done for Edmund…one other could take his place… and only one…
*DVD clip from animated LWW (from Alpha Omega Productions - www.AOP.com) - show Aslan being sacrificed
Romans 6:10 “The death he died, he died to sin, once for all…”
Did Edmund deserve the mercy and grace shown to Him by Aslan?
Do we deserve the mercy and grace shown to us by Jesus?
Mercy - When you do not get what you deserve.
Grace – When you get what you do not deserve.
Aslan died for a traitor...paying the penalty
Jesus died and took our place…
1 John 2:2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
4. Personal enounter needed:
Now, for Edmund to be saved from the White Witch…something had to happen… Aslan sends warriors to rescue him, but then Edmund has to meet with Aslan face-to-face, one-on-one… And Edmund has to decide to serve Aslan…
Aslan would pay the price for Edmund, but Edmund had to decide to turn away from the White Witch and serve Aslan.
Conclusion: We have caused ourselves problems.
Romans 6:23 ...the wages of sin is death
But Jesus has paid the price for the solution
Romans 6:23 ...the gift of God is eternal life
We can now have our sins forgiven…but we ALSO must meet personally with Jesus…
We can receive God’s grace…but we have to personally accept his payment and his lordship…
