Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
Encourage believers to live in the light of Christ, find gratitude in their trials, and uphold God's will in their lives, even in challenging times.
Good morning, brothers and sisters! Today we’re talking going to be diving into three main points, "living in the light of Christ, giving thanks in the midst of darkness, and upholding God's will in our lives." It's about embracing God's word, finding gratitude in our trials, and striving to follow His will, even when things get tough.
In the words of Rick Warren, "God is more interested in your character than your comfort. He's more interested in making your life holy than He is in making your life happy." That's what we're going to dive into today, so let's lend our ears and open our hearts to God's word.
Our scripture for today is 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 (NIV):
"Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, 'Peace and safety,' destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing."
Let's start with a prayer.
Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for this opportunity to gather and learn from Your word. As we explore these verses from Thessalonians, we ask for your guidance and wisdom. Help us to live in Your light, find gratitude in our trials, and diligently uphold Your will in our lives. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Living in the light of Christ is not merely a concept, but a way of life that every believer is called to embody. It is a state of being that illuminates our path, guides our decisions, and shapes our character. This light is not something we generate ourselves, but it is the divine radiance of Christ that shines through us. As children of God, we are not meant to dwell in darkness, but to live in the light of His love, grace, and truth.
A beacon of hope in a world filled with despair and uncertainty: It is the assurance that we are never alone, for Christ is always with us. His light guides us when we are lost, comforts us when we are in pain, and gives us the strength to overcome our trials. It is a constant reminder of His presence in our lives and His promise to never leave nor forsake us.
Reflecting His love and grace to others: Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, we are to reflect the light of Christ in our words, actions, and attitudes. This means showing kindness to those who hurt us, forgiving those who wrong us, and loving those who are difficult to love. It means being a beacon of hope to those who are lost, a source of comfort to those who are hurting, and a channel of God's love to those who are in need.
Walking in obedience to His commands: As Jesus said in John 14:15, "If you love me, keep my commands." Obedience is not a burden, but a joy for those who live in the light of Christ. It is the natural response of a heart that is in love with Jesus. When we obey His commands, we are not only expressing our love for Him, but we are also aligning ourselves with His will and purpose for our lives.
Living a life of transparency and integrity: The light of Christ exposes the darkness in our hearts and brings our sins into the open. It challenges us to be honest about our struggles, confess our sins, and seek God's forgiveness. It calls us to live a life that is consistent with our profession of faith, a life that is marked by truth, honesty, and integrity.
Living a life of purpose and significance: The light of Christ illuminates our path and reveals God's plan and purpose for our lives. It gives meaning to our existence and motivates us to use our gifts and talents for God's glory. It inspires us to make a difference in the world and to leave a lasting impact for Christ.
Pastor, here would be a good place to share a personal story about how you practice living in the light of Christ. Is this difficult for you? Why or why not?
