Message Point: Jesus performs mighty miracles because He is God Almighty!

Focus Passage: Matthew 14:13-33 (Pew Bible page 1128)

Supplemental Passage: And the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them. But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that He had done, and the children who were shouting in the temple, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they became indignant (Matthew 21:14-15 NASB)

Introduction: The Hebrew words for “Might God” are El Gibbor. “El” is the noun in the phrase. “Gibbor” is the adjective that modifies the noun. ?? ??????

“El” is the shortened form of “Elohim,” (El is short for “Elohim”) which is the most common name used for God in the Old Testament. When the Bible says in its very first verse in Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,” the word for God there is “Elohim.”

Whenever the shortened form “el” is used, instead of “Elohim,” in the Bible, “el” always describes “The Mighty One.” “El” = “The Mighty One” Which is very interesting, because “Gibbor” the second word in the phrase, is an adjective that modifies mighty one. I. Feeding 5000

a. The Disciples wanted to send the people away

b. Jesus said to bring what food was available

c. Jesus fed 5000 men plus women and children out of 5 loaves and 2 fish and had leftovers!

II. Walking on Water

a. Sent the Disciples on ahead and sent the crowd home

b. Went up the mountain to pray

c. Walked on the water to the boat

d. Caused Peter to walk on the water, too

III. Calming a Storm

a. One of the reasons Peter sank is he looked at the storm

b. When He got in the boat, the wind stopped

c. And there *arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling up. Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they *woke Him and *said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?" And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Hush, be still." And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. And He said to them, "Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?" They became very much afraid and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?" (Mark 4:37-41 NASB)

Application/Invitation: Are you trusting Jesus to do mighty things in your life? Like Peter, you gotta get out of the boat.
