Memorial Day Statement
Contributed by Jerry Cosper on May 21, 2015 (message contributor)
Summary: This is a simple short realization of what Memorial Day weekend is all about. A good introduction to a message or to a service dedicated to Memorial Day.
This is Memorial Day weekend. This is the weekend that many look forward to because it means a 3-day weekend. Or maybe it means going to the beach. Or maybe having a big picnic. Yes, lots of fun events are usually planned for this weekend.
For the most part, church attendance goes down a bit on this day. Because of the fact that people are at those picnics, or on those beaches.
But what this weekend is actually intended for it to remember. Thousands upon thousands of men and women have given their very lives for the freedom that we enjoy. If had not been for them, we might not even be able to meet in a church as a congregated body of believers.
So let’s pause for a moment and remember those who have died in service to our country, our freedom, our security, and our choices. Not everyone in the world has the privileges that we have. We have them because of the lives that have been offered.
So today we honor and thank the men and women who have given their all for us. If you have a relative that served our country and have since passed away, would you please stand.
We thank them and we honor their service.
But let us not forget to remember the ultimate price that was paid by Jesus Christ who died on a cruel cross for the forgiveness of our sins, who set the example for us, who was crucified, died, was buried, and arose on the third day that we may have the promise of eternal life.
These we remember today.
