This sermon explores the concept of self-control, a fruit of the Spirit. It provides a roadmap to gaining more self-control, starting with acknowledging our problems, leaving the past behind, mastering our emotions, believing in our capacity for change, avoiding temptation, and relying on Christ's power.

Introduction

This sermon is about self-control, which is one of the fruits of the Spirit. Self-control is important because many of our problems stem from a lack of it. We often wonder why we can't lose weight, keep our house clean, or break bad habits. The answer is that we lack self-control. Our biggest problem is ourselves.

Section 1: The Importance of Self-Control

Proverbs 25:28 says that a person without self-control is like a city without walls, vulnerable and easily overcome. Self-discipline and self-control are crucial for success in life. The apostle Paul compared life to competing in sports, where self-control is necessary to win the prize. Self-control is not optional for Christians.

Section 2: Steps to Cultivate Self-Control

Developing self-control is a process that takes time, but there are six steps we can take to cultivate it:

1. Admit You Have A Problem: The first step is acknowledging that we have a problem with self-control. We often try to deny or ignore it, but admitting our struggle is the first step towards change.

2. Put The Past Behind You: Dwelling on past failures hinders our progress. We need to let go of the past and focus on moving forward. Just like a toddler learning to walk, we may stumble and fall, but we must keep trying.

3. Master Your Emotions: Our feelings can often lead us astray. We shouldn't let our moods dictate our actions. Instead, we should challenge our emotions and take control of them.

4. Believe You Can Change: Our beliefs shape our behavior. If we believe we can't change, we won't. But if we believe in our ability to change with God's help, we can overcome our lack of self-control.

5. Avoid Temptation: Common sense tells us to stay away from situations that tempt us. We need to plan in advance and avoid circumstances that weaken our self-control. If something causes us problems, we should stay away from it.

6. Depend On Christ's Power: We must rely on the power of Christ to help us develop self-control. We can't change ourselves, but with God's guidance, we can overcome our struggles. The Holy Spirit is there to guide us and empower us to resist temptation.

Conclusion

In conclusion, self-control is a vital characteristic for Christians to develop. It requires admitting our problem, letting go of the past, mastering our emotions, believing in our ability to change, avoiding temptation, and depending on Christ's power. With God's help, we can cultivate self-control and live a more disciplined and fulfilling life.
