Summary: Candlelight Service Meditation focusing on the use of ’light’ in all of Scripture

“Light of the World”

GENESIS 1:3-5 = God creates the Universe and separates the light from the dark.

"And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning-the first day."

EXODUS 10:21-23 = God miraculously gave His people light when the rest of the world was dark.

"So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and total darkness covered all Egypt for three days. No one could see anyone else or leave his place for three days. Yet all the Israelites had light in the places where they lived."

EXODUS 13:21-22 = God gave light to His people in order that they would know the way they should go and they would not get lost.

"By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people."

2 SAMUEL 22:29 = King David praises God as his Rock, his Fortress, and his Deliverer. He also says of God that God was his lamp that turns the darkness into light.

"You are my lamp, O LORD ; the LORD turns my darkness into light. "

EZRA 9:8 = Ezra reflects that God has not abandoned His people, but has been gracious in forgiveness. He says that God has given light to their eyes and has given relief in their bondage.

"But now, for a brief moment, the LORD our God has been gracious in leaving us a remnant and giving us a firm place in his sanctuary, and so our God gives light to our eyes and a little relief in our bondage."

JOHN 1:1-18

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God– children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ ” From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father’s side, has made him known."

ALL OF SCRIPTURE TELLS US THE SAME THING:

> Jesus is the Light from God sent to the World

> Jesus, by His life and His teaching, separates out in this world what is good and what is evil

> Jesus offers Himself to all who believe that He may light their world

> Jesus gives direction in a world that is dark, lost, and unloving

> Jesus is God’s Son that tells us that He loves us and has Grace in forgiveness for us
