Letting Go
Contributed by Roger Nelmes on Jan 29, 2008 (message contributor)
Summary: We LET GO of Sin…Self…Schedule in order that we can LET GOD be exalted! I used this sermon as a springboard for See You At The Pole. We also used alot of video illustrations.
Letting Go
Open with DVD – Visual Reality: Volume 6; “Be Still”
Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
BE STILL in the Hebrew can also be translated, “let go”. In other words quit holding on to things that keep you from exalting God and giving him his proper place in your life.
So we can read this verse as “Let go, and know that I am God.”
The Message transliteration says it this way. “Step out of the traffic! Take a long, loving look at me, your High God, above politics, above everything.”
1. Letting Go of Sin
DVD – Visual Reality: Volume 10; “Dying to Live”
Two Types of Sin:
Commission: things that we know are wrong to do, yet we do them anyway
Omission: thing we know that we ought to do, yet we don’t
Have students name a few of each.
David knew exactly what he was doing when he lusted after Bathsheba…
"Create in me clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit."
Psalm 51:10-12
When we let go of SIN, God is able to be exalted through our lives.
“Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your father in heaven.” Matthew 5:6
Letting go allow God to seen!
2. Letting Go of Self
“If you have any encouragement from being united in Christ, if any comfort from His love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of your should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Philippians 2:1-4
What is the opposite of selfishness? HUMILITY.
Selfishness wants the biggest piece of cake. Selfishness doesn’t want anyone playing with it’s toys. Selfishness pleases itself even, at times, at the other’s expense.
Letting go of SELF allows God to be in the lime-light.
3. Letting Go of Our Schedule
DVD – STL: Archive Video, Youth Alive Mission Video (1:47)
“My food, said Jesus, is to do the will of Him who sent me and to finish His work. Do you not say, Four months more and then the harvest? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together.” John 4:34-35
What clutters your schedule?
How much of your schedule is necessary?
Letting go of your SCHEDULE allows room for God’s work to be done.

DVD – See You At The Pole: Psalm 46 (2.53)
Letting go of SIN allows Christ to be seen by others through our life.
Letting go of SELF allows God to be in the lime-light.
Letting go of your SCHEDULE allows you the time and energy to reach your school – the harvest – for Christ.
