Lamech & Enoch Series

Summary: A series on Characters in the Bible that has enough information about them that you can put on a postcard. This is a study with questions that I ask people to get them engaged.
Cain’s family were great inventors. There was Cain the city builder, Jabal the herder of cattle and tent dweller his brother Jubal was one who had a talent for music and their half-brother Tubal-cain was the first iron worker. Oh there was talent in this family. Oh what talent but oh what arrogance. Men can still be successful without God. Well that is success from the world’s perspective. Not having a lot of money does not mean that God is not with us or blessing us.
Seth’s generation (maybe not all) called upon the name of the Lord. Hebrews 11:10, 16; 13:14
They realized the importance of the presence of the Lord. This is the opposite of their cousins. They also showed their dependence on him. Whereas Cain’s family wanted to earn their own way. They wanted to be independent.
This is not to say that everyone in the lineage of Seth followed after God but there were many more than in the lineage of Cain who did not even recognize there being a God.
God will always have his few. He will always have his remnant. If you ever fill like you are fighting this battle alone just look around you can always find the remnant of the Lord.
In every Christian there should be an unsettlement. There should be a restlessness. There should be a discomfort. There should be a dissatisfaction.
Contrast of Generations shown in the contrast of two major characters.
Lamech of the lineage of Cain
And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. (Genesis 4:19 AV)
And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt. If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold. (Genesis 4:23-24 AV)
Lamech was a man of arrogance. We don’t know many details about the story but I believe it is more than just a story of self-defense. Some of these Postcards of People don’t have much written about them but it is what is written about them that is important.
You know when we die people won’t remember everything about us. They won’t remember all the many years that we lived hear on earth. But what is important is what little bit they will remember. What kind of mark did we make on the earth? What kind of difference did we make?
Enoch of the lineage of Seth
And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. (Genesis 5:21-24 AV)
Something happened to Enoch. For sixty five years Enoch was just as the others were. His dependence was not on the Lord but on himself. But something happened with the birth of Methuselah. The Bible tells us that after Methuselah was born “Enoch walked with God”. (Methuselah’s name means “man of dart or “his death will send”). The flood is sent the year Methuselah dies)
