King David: An Introduction

1 Samuel 16:1-13

David was greatest personality in the history of the world. He enjoys very unique position in three religions of the world - Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

I Sam 13:14 says… the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and the Lord has appointed him to be ruler over his people. Man, after own heart: Pleasing to the heart, Gentleness and not doing things which will hurt, humble and simple. Corrective and doing the desire of the person. Longing to see the face and to know the love. Sacrifice and doing the things as per the wish of a person whom we love so much. Ps.14:2 “The Lord looks down from heaven on humankind to see if there are any who are wise, who seek after God’. We read in Isaiah “no one to intervene” (Is.59:16). We read in Rm. 3:10-12 that “there is no one who is righteous, not even one; there is no one who has understanding, no one seeks God. All have turned aside, together they have become worthless”.

Samuel did not know who was selected by God, Saul was not aware, people were ignorant. Even David never knew that. It was absolute God’s plan to choose him and to appoint him as King. If Prophet Samuel knew that he could have shared with his prayer partners then it would have spread to all. IF Saul knew he could have killed David. if David knew that he could have shared with his parents and brothers, then he could have faced the problems like Joseph ben Jacob. So, God was so concerned about everything. God ‘s blessings are hidden to our eyes. But surely available.

David was Forgotten by all:

David was ruddy handsome (1 Sam 16:12). He was courageous, faithful, fighter, he killed a lion and a bear to save the sheep (1 Sam.16:11,17:34-36). He was the 8th son of Jesse. He was very insignificant. His parents forgot to inform him or invite him to the Festival. He was forgotten by his own wife, by his own friends. He often became orphan- Prophet Samuel could not save him (1 Sam 19;18). Priests could not protect him (1 Sam 21:9-10,22:15). No one to help him to redeem him from his problems.

How often you feel that your children have forgotten you. Parents have forgotten you. Friends have forgotten you.

God remembered Noah (Gen.8:1), Joseph was forgotten by cup bearer of Pharaoh. But God remembered Noah and removed the obstacles. God mad the servant to remember David and blessed him (Gen.41:9,14). Is.44:21 says you shall not be forgotten. Ps.9:18 says needy shall not be forgotten.

David was Hatred by all:

Royal families in fight are normal in any kingdom. David became enemy to Saul, to his army men. (1 Sam 18:11,19:10, 20:33). Servants of Saul were given bonus for giving trouble to David (18:22-24). There was a council against David. David had numerous enemies (Ps.41:5-7). He had jealousy from his own brothers. His own army went against him. Saul banned all helps (1 Sam. 22:6-8). All men of God had gone through these situations (Joseph, Moses and even Jesus himself. The name of God is refuge (Pr.18:10, Nu.35:13- refuge cities). Jesus was called “My beloved son”. But he had to face lots of enemies.

David was honoured by all:

God has chosen him as king and started to bless him. He had many blessings but few I pen down here for our edification.

Grants Justice: In Lk.18:7 we read “he grants justice to his chosen ones”. Are you mistreated and robbed of your justice? God will do the right thing at the right time.

Staff Sprouts: In Nu.17:5 God said “the staff of the man whom I choose shall sprout”. Staff means stick, stem of an almond tree. Now what is your staff which is not sprouting, not budding and not producing blossoms. It is nothing but our job, our life, our business, our health.

Descendants Spared: In 1 ki.11:34-I have chosen David and because of him, I will spare Solomon and his descendants Rehoboam to the end. I made covenant with him (Ps.89:3).

He was exalted as king (2 Sam 23:1). He was anointed man of God (1 Sam 16:13,12.18; 17:42).

Conclusion:

If God has called you be happy. Stick on to your call. He will honour you at the appropriate time. HE never fails you. Wait upon the Lord.
