Just the Facts: Why Christians Ought to be Happy

Psalm 34.1-22

When David fled from King Saul, he took refuge with the Philistine King Abimelech.

David feared that the king might kill him so he acted insane, and the king sent him away.

David looked at this as divine deliverance from God and he wrote this Psalm to celebrate his deliverance.

I find in this Psalm, seven facts that show Christians why we should be happy.

1—The fact that their thoughts have been established. (1—3)

Psa 34:1-3 I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. (2) My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. (3) O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.

What thoughts have been established? Their thoughts of God have been established!

They will bless the Lord at ALL times and continually Praise His name. Why?

Preacher, my situation is so bad that I can’t praise God. Look in Acts 16 and tell me what Paul and Silas did while in prison.

Acts 16.25 “And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.”

Even in prison they prayed and sang praises to God. Prisons back then were much worse than they are today.

No matter your circumstances, there is always a blessing somewhere, and you can bless God

because if you are a true child of God, your thoughts are established, because you think of God continually.

The next fact that shows why...

2—The fact that all their fears are banished. (4)

David was delivered from ALL his fears. We know this because we have recorded for us his life story.

But I have good news, and it is based on the fact that God can and will deliver you from ALL your fears.

Look at the progression of this deliverance in verse 4: I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

I sought...David sought out the Lord. Do you seek God in your daily life?

He had the faith and confidence that as he sought for God that God would hear him and listen. (He heard me.)

Then after God heard his plea, He delivered Him from his fears. God can and will do the same for you today and that is a FACT.

The third fact that shows why...

3—They have all their sins covered (5).

Psa 34:5 They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.

Looking to God, David was lightened (cheerful)...David’s burden was light. Jesus tells us that “His yoke is easy and His burden light.”

God can lift your burdens and cause you to be cheerful, because in the righteousness of Christ,

we can stand before Him pure and not be ashamed because through the blood of the Lamb, all of our sins are covered.

We ought to bed happy for the simple fact that Christ’s blood has covered all of our sins.

The fourth fact that shows why...

4—Their prayers are answered (4, 6, 15, 17).

Psa 34:4: I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. (6) This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. (15) The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. (17) The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.

David’s prayers were answered by God.

Throughout David’s celebration in this Psalm he makes reference to God hearing his cries and answering them.

God still answers prayer today. I see four things that were key to David’s prayers being answered:

1—He sought God (4)

2—He cried to God in humility (6)—poor man

3—He trusted God (8)

4—He feared God (7, 9)

When God answered David’s prayers it wasn’t a half done job. He didn’t get so far in His answer and stop. God finished the job.

Verses 4, 6, 17, 19—God delivered David from ALL his fears, ALL his trouble, ALL his afflictions.

It was a complete deliverance and complete answer to prayer.

It is a known fact that God still gives complete deliverance through the Lord Jesus Christ today and He still answers prayers completely today.

You ought to be happy in the fact that God has provided a way for us to be Happy!

Does God answer your prayers?

Another fact that shows why...

5—They are delivered from ALL their enemies. (7)

God delivered David from the hand of his enemies. God will deliver you too.

Psa 34:7 The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.
