Summary: We often maximize our earth heritage, while minimizing or spiritual one.

JOINT HEIRS WITH JESUS

Rom 8:12-17

INTRODUCTION

A. I will forever remember my slip of the tongue nearly 50 years ago when I said, “I am Arlen Campbell’s only male error instead of only male heir.

1. My father had no tangible assets to pass on to his heirs, but he did pass on some things of great value.

2. I might not be a child of God today if he had not been one before me.

3. I have nothing tangible to pass on to my heirs, but I pray that I have passed on something more valuable than gold or silver.

B. We begin by reading our text.

I. WHAT THE TEXT DOES NOT TEACH

A. “If offspring then heirs” (Acts 17:28-31; Rom 9:5-8).

B. “If baptized, then heirs.”

1. Baptism no more proves that we are heirs of God than birth proves that we are alive.

2. However, both baptism and birth are prerequisites to life (Gal 3:23-29).

II. WHAT THE PASSAGE DOES TEACH

A. We cannot live like Satan’s sons and expect to inherit with God’s children

(vv. 12-13, 1-8).

B. A spirit of slavery is incompatible with the spirit of sonship (vv.14-17; Gal 4: 1-7;

1 John 2:18-24)

C. If we are sons of God, we can expect to suffer with the Son of God and also share the glory of the Son of God (vv. 17-25; 1 John 3:1-3).

CONCLUSION (Rom 8:26-30)
