Job’s Battle Text: Job 1:6-12

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. 7 And the LORD said to Satan, “From where do you come?”

So Satan answered the LORD and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.” 8 Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?”

9 So Satan answered the LORD and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing? 10 Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face!”

12 And the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his person.” So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

Job was morally blameless-a man of complete integrity. He was prosperous in sons, daughters, livestock, and servants. Job owned 7,000 sheep. 3,000 camels, 500 oxen, and 500 hundred donkeys. He had hundreds if not thousands of acres of land, barns, and fences everywhere. Job was a rich man from the east. Moreover, the word makes it clear that God was proud of Job. (How he handled his riches, and feared God.)

Today, satan is walking around upon the earth. He has legions of fallen angels doing his work. He’s up to no good;He walks upon the face of the earth. Lets make this personal, presently, he looks for those he can destroy. He’s hanging out at your work, house, on the streets corner, anywhere and everywhere. Walking probing and, looking for those he can steal from, devour, or destroy.

1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour:

Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them.

It’s not clear if these beings are heavenly angels or rebellious demons. I would say, “some of both.” We know that there are heavenly angels all around God’s throne; however, according to the Bible satan still has access to God.

Zechariah 3:1 And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him.

Revelation 12:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

Job 1:7 And the LORD said to Satan, “From where do you come?”

So Satan answered the LORD and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.”

The devil has to travel by foot. He’s not for ever present, all-knowing, and all-powerful.

However, God is all knowing, powerful and for ever present. 2 Chronicles 16:9a For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him...

Job 1:8 Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?”

Considered– comes from a military word which means to spy on the enemy and find their weakness. This is exactly what Satan does night and day. He spies on you to find your weakness and then he attacks you.

Job 1:9-10 So Satan answered the LORD and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing? 10 Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.

Satan says, yes I’ve spied on him, and this is what I’ve noticed: I can’t touch him. You’ve built a hedge around him.

He wants to be the hedge around you. Zechariah 2:5 For I, saith the LORD, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her.

Unfortunately, many find their own hedges to hide behind. Hedges like finances, relationship etc. What is your hedge?

Job 1:11-12 But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face!” 12 And the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his person.” So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.
