Preach "The King Has Come" 3-Part Series this week!
Preach Christmas week
This sermon's main point is to explore the themes of the Holy Spirit's promise, living in Jesus' love and light, and the concept of the Water of Life as presented in the seventh chapter of John's gospel.
Good morning, church family! I hope you’re all doing well and ready to dive into the Word of God together. Today, we're going to be exploring some profound themes from the seventh chapter of John's gospel. We will discuss the Promise of the Holy Spirit, Living in the Love and Light of Jesus, and the Water of Life.
Before we get started, let me share this quote with you from A.W. Tozer, a respected Christian author and pastor. He said, "Without the Holy Spirit, Christian discipleship would be inconceivable, even impossible. There can be no life without the life-giver, no understanding without the Spirit of truth, no fellowship without the unity of the Spirit, no Christlikeness of character apart from His fruit, and no effective witness without His power."
The Promise of the Holy Spirit Jesus made to his disciples was one that holds profound implications for our lives as followers of Christ. When we look at the passage from John 7:37-39, we see Jesus speaking on the last and greatest day of the festival. He makes a bold proclamation, inviting anyone who is thirsty to come to Him and drink. This thirst is not a physical one, but a spiritual one. It's a thirst for righteousness, for truth, for a relationship with God.
Jesus promises that whoever believes in Him will have rivers of living water flowing from within them. This is a powerful metaphor that speaks to the abundant life that the Holy Spirit brings. It's not a trickle or a stream, but rivers of living water. This speaks to the overflowing, abundant nature of the Holy Spirit's work in our lives. This is the promise that Jesus makes to His followers - that they will receive the Holy Spirit, who will be a source of life, truth, and power within them.
This promise is one for all who believe in Him. This includes us, church family. The Holy Spirit is not a distant, abstract concept, but a personal, intimate presence in our lives. The Holy Spirit is God's presence with us, guiding us, empowering us, and transforming us to become more like Christ.
The Holy Spirit is also the one who enables us to live out our calling as followers of Christ. As Tozer pointed out, without the Holy Spirit, Christian discipleship would be inconceivable, even impossible. It's the Holy Spirit who gives us the power to live a life of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These are the fruits of the Spirit, and they're evidence of the Holy Spirit's work in our lives.
The Holy Spirit also equips us for service in the kingdom of God. Each one of us has been given spiritual gifts by the Holy Spirit, and these gifts are meant to be used for the building up of the body of Christ. Whether it's the gift of teaching, prophecy, serving, encouraging, giving, leadership, or mercy, these gifts are given by the Holy Spirit. They're a manifestation of the rivers of living water that Jesus promised would flow from within us.
The promise of the Holy Spirit is not just about what we receive, but also about what we give. As the Holy Spirit fills us, we're called to be channels of God's love, grace, and truth to the world around us. The rivers of living water that flow from within us are meant to spill over into the lives of others, bringing refreshment, renewal, and restoration.
The Holy Spirit is also our Comforter and Counselor. In times of trouble, confusion, or grief, the Holy Spirit is there to comfort us, guide us, and give us peace. The Holy Spirit also convicts us of sin, leading us to repentance and helping us to live a life that is pleasing to God.
