Series: Biblical Cities- Jericho [#2]

JERICHO- A PLACE OF…

Joshua 6:1-2

Introduction:

We are continuing in our Series about some of the most mentioned Cities in the Bible. Tonight, we are going to continue to study the city that is 3rd on the list- Jericho. Jericho is mentioned 64 times in the Bible. Many of these mentions are about location. There are many passages about location in the Book of Numbers and Deuteronomy.

Joshua 6:1-2

After the victory at Jericho, Joshua placed a curse on the city.

Joshua 6:26

Jericho still existed after the curse; but the curse was about rebuilding the City back to where it was before its destruction. It was not until the days of King Ahab, (about 500 years later) that someone rebuilt Jericho.

1 Kings 16:34

Just as God had said, Hiel rebuilt Jericho at the cost of his firstborn son and set up the gates at the cost of his youngest son. This was over 500 years after the curse was given; but God does what He says He will do.

We find that several different things happened in and around Jericho that has a significant lesson to us. Most of these things happened before Hiel rebuilt the City.

Joshua 12:7-9

Jericho was a place of…

1. Victory.

In this list of all of the victories Joshua had, it started with Jericho. As we studied last week, this victory came from faith. This is found in what is called the “Hall of Faith” in Hebrews.

Hebrews 11:30

Our victories are always found in our faith. We are to walk by faith, not by sight.

2 Samuel 10:1-5

Jericho was a place of…

2. Restoration.

David sent some men to show his sympathy to Hanun the Ammonite King, because his father had died; and Hanun repaid that visit by humiliating David’s men. David had his men go to Jericho until their beards had grown back.

There are times when God gives us a place and time to be restored. Never forget that God is a God of restoration. He can restore you when no one or nothing else can. He can restore relationships. He can restore peace and joy.

Mark 10:46-52

Jericho was a place of…

3. Healing.

As Jesus and His Disciples were leaving Jericho, blind Bartimaeus started shouting to Jesus for mercy. There were plenty of people telling him to shut up; but he did not quit. He had faith that if he could get to Jesus, that he would be healed. Jesus asked him what he wanted, and he told Jesus he wanted to be healed; and he was healed.

Conclusion:

Victory, restoration, and healing come from faith in Jesus. Not only are we saved by faith; but we are also matured and strengthened through faith.
