Summary: Past mistakes, failures and heartaches can be debilitating. We tend to either deny our past or try to compensate for our past. But neither resolve the damaging effects of our past. We need to move on. But how?

“Remember not the former things, neither consider the things of old.” Isaiah 43:18

LEAVE THE PAST BEHIND - If you hope to make progress in this new year, then you must leave last year behind. The past is over and done with. Don’t dwell on what could have been or should have been. It is what it is. You can’t change the past. You can learn from the past, and you can cherish the fond memories of the past, but you can’t live in the past. (Philippians 3:13)

DON’T DWELL ON THE PAST - Furthermore, you must not take the past into consideration as a determinant factor regarding the future. Too often we limit ourselves going forward because of the failures and problems of the past. If you dwell on the past, then the fear of repeating the failures of your past will discourage you from moving forward.

LIVE IN THE PRESENT - It’s time to move on. The past is gone. So, let it go. You must live in the present as you anticipate the future. But you can’t determine the future anymore than you could change the past. The future is in God’s hands.

YOU ARE GOD’S RESPONSIBILITY - Your life belongs to Him. He is responsible for you. He is ready, willing, and able to assume that responsibility if you will let Him. That’s what the Lordship of Christ is all about.

SUBMIT TO HIS LORDSHIP - Therefore, submit to His Lordship over your life and Christ will guide you safely through the uncharted waters of your future. (James 4:7, Romans 12:1) Go with God and your future will be secure. No matter what happens, the Good Lord will be there for you. He will lead you, protect you and provide for you. Now that’s a future to get excited about!
