The constant need to encourage each other in faith

Introduction

"A friend is someone who comes when everyone else has gone." The Christian life is challenging, filled with obstacles and difficulties. Even the apostle Paul himself faced many hardships. How many times have you felt discouraged in your walk with Christ? There are countless opportunities to lose joy and enthusiasm in obeying God's Word. What we need is words of hope and encouragement. Tonight, I want to challenge you to commit to being alert to the opportunities God gives us to encourage one another and strengthen each other's faith. Let's dive into our passage for today, 1 Thessalonians 2:13-20, and learn how Paul comforted the faith of the Thessalonian believers.

I. We must encourage our brothers and sisters by praising the work of their faith (1 Thessalonians 2:13-16)

What are the fruits of an active faith in a believer that we can celebrate with our brothers and sisters?

A. A faith that receives God's Word correctly (1 Thessalonians 2:13):

The Thessalonian believers received the Word of God not as mere human words, but as the true Word of God that works in those who believe. We should celebrate and commend their humility in receiving God's Word, rather than expressing frustration or disappointment when they stumble.

B. A faith that remains steadfast in difficulty (1 Thessalonians 2:14-16):

The Thessalonian believers endured persecution from their own people for their faith. They suffered for their commitment to the gospel. We should encourage them to persevere, reminding them that God is in control of every situation and working for their good. We can also remind them that justice will be served, as the enemies of the gospel will face God's judgment.

II. We must encourage our brothers and sisters by expressing our confidence in their enduring faith (1 Thessalonians 2:17-20)

How can we express our confidence that their faith will endure?

A. Their faith will endure even without the support of others (1 Thessalonians 2:17-18):

Paul desired to be with the Thessalonian believers, but circumstances prevented him from doing so. However, he expressed his confidence that their faith would remain strong. We should also express our trust that their faith will mature and be productive, even when they don't have the support of others.

B. Their faith will endure until the end (1 Thessalonians 2:19-20):

Our hope, joy, and crown of boasting are the believers themselves when Christ returns. We can have confidence that God will preserve their faith. We should remind them that God is faithful and will complete the good work He started in them.

Conclusion

The Christian life is challenging, but God has placed us in the body of Christ to encourage and strengthen one another. Tonight, we learned two simple ways to do this: praising their faith and expressing our confidence in their enduring faith. Take a moment to reflect on those who have encouraged you in your walk with Christ and thank God for them. The church is filled with believers who, like us, experience ups and downs. God wants to use you to be a blessing. Will you allow Him to use you?
