IMPLICATIONS From JESUS’ BURIAL & RESURRECTION-II—Luke 23:50--24:12
Need:
The death, burial & resurrection of Jesus is historical fact.
Trust in those facts is a key factor in a person’s being ‘born-again’. Trust in those facts is key to a Christian’s relationship with the family of God.
So, Luke lays out the historicity of Jesus’ burial & resurrection.
Jesus was dead, buried, & resurrected.
What details surround Jesus’ burial & resurrection?
14 implications from the details surrounding Jesus’ burial & resurrection.
Last week we found that, Personal Implications from Jesus’ burial & resurrection tell us that, God’s People Can...
1. MAN STRATEGIC PLACES(in God’s Plan)(23:50-52)Joseph of Arimathea.
2. RESTORE DIGNITY(23:53)Joseph’s borrowed tomb.
3. PRIORITIZE GOD’s TIME RESTRAINTS(23:54)Preparation Day.
4. LOVINGLY, SUPPORT GOD’s WORK(23:55)The women ministered & followed the burial closely.
5. RESPECT GOD’s WILL(23:56)The women rested on the Sabbath.
Today we will discover that:
6—An Implication from Jesus’ burial & resurrection is that God’s People Can...
FOLLOW THRU(24:1)
Explanation:(24:1)
24:1—“Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, & certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared.”
“Now on the first day of the week”—Sunday
“Very early in the morning” or “At early dawn”(oryrou bayeov)—is a Greek idiom, literally meaning, ‘at deep dawn.’
The Gospel of John tells us that it was still dark(Jn. 20:1). Yet The Gospel of Mark tells us that the sun had risen(Mk. 16:2).
•So, evidently it was still dark when they left together for “the tomb.” But by the time they arrived at Jesus’ “tomb” the sun had risen.”(RWP)
•Also, the location is ‘hilly or mountainous’ so the sun could have risen while still leaving the tomb in darkness or vice-versa.
The “spices & fragrant oils”(23:56) were for anointing the dead body as it corrupted.
*The Jews did not embalm, but rather merely covered the stench of decay, by anointing the body with sweet smelling aromatics(23:56)(NAC/BECNT).
It seems that the women had previously “prepared” these anointing “spices”(23:56). Mark’s gospel tells us that the women also “bought spices” “when the Sabbath was past.”
Argumentation:
Ps. 66:13-14—“I will go into Your house with burnt offerings; I will pay You my vows, Which my lips have uttered And my mouth has spoken when I was in trouble.”
Mat. 5:33-37—“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ “But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; “nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. “But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ & your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.”
Application:
?Do YOU FOLLOW THRU with YOUR God-ordained commitments thru the risen Lord Jesus?
?What Implications are brought to YOUR life by Jesus’ burial & resurrection?

Be FRUSTRATED In Their SERVICE(24:2-3)
Explanation:(24:2-3)The women’s intended plan failed, because Jesus’ body was missing.
Lk. 24:2-3—“But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. Then they went in & did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.”
When the women approached “the tomb”, they found that “the stone” had been “rolled away” from its resting place over the entrance to the tomb.
Moving the “stone” sealing “the tomb” was no easy task, for even physically strong people—Mat. & Mk. call it “a large stone.” Perhaps this is why “they”(the women) went as a group to anoint the body. They may have been uncertainly hoping-against-hope to find help there.
Mark records(Mk. 16:3) that they even approached the tomb knowing/supposing it to be closed & wondered among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?””
There had been an earthquake associated with the angel’s presence & the stone’s displacement(Mat. 28:2).
John describes the stone’s displacement as having been ‘taken away’(airw).
The entrance of a Jewish tomb ‘could’ be anywhere from 3-6ft. high. But, Peter had to “stoop” to look inside Jesus’ tomb(:12). The “stone” covering the opening would be circular & placed on edge, so that it could be rolled into place to cover the entrance. “Stones” used in that manner were roughly 1ft. thick. And depending on the type of “stone” used, it could weigh between 600-4000 lbs. Potentially two men could roll it into place with great effort(Mt 27:60; Jn 19:38-42).
“The stone” was set inside a ‘groove’ in front of the entrance, & kept from falling away from the entrance, by a short “stone” retaining wall that stood in front of “the tomb” opening. The groove was slightly slanted toward “the tomb” entrance on one side. So to cover the entrance to “the tomb”, “the stone” would be rolled ‘down’ the incline & come to rest in an appropriate depression directly in front of the entrance & held in place behind the retaining wall.
