INTRODUCTION
The story of the man born blind in John chapter nine is a powerful testimony of divine transformation. After Jesus healed him, the religious leaders questioned him repeatedly about how the miracle occurred. Though the man could not explain every detail, he confidently declared one undeniable truth: “I was blind, now I see.”
This statement reflects more than physical healing; it represents the transforming power of Christ. When Jesus touches a life, change becomes evident. The man’s simple testimony became stronger than the arguments of the religious leaders who refused to accept the miracle.
Many people today are spiritually blind, unable to recognise God’s truth or see His work in their lives. However, when Christ opens a person’s eyes, understanding, faith, and purpose begin to unfold. Just as the blind man experienced a life-changing encounter with Jesus, every believer can testify of God’s transforming power.
1. SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS IS A REAL CONDITION
Before experiencing the miracle, the man lived in physical blindness, which reflects the spiritual blindness many people experience.
a. The Reality of Spiritual Darkness (2 Corinthians 4:4)
The god of this world blinds the minds of unbelievers so that they cannot see the light of the gospel.
b. Lack of Spiritual Understanding (Ephesians 4:18)
Without God, people walk in darkness because their understanding is darkened.
c. The Need for Divine Illumination (Psalm 119:18)
Only God can open the eyes of individuals to understand spiritual truth.
d. The Danger of Religious Blindness (Matthew 15:14)
Even religious leaders can become spiritually blind when they reject God’s truth.
Biblical Example:
The Apostle Paul was spiritually blind while persecuting Christians until his encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus opened his eyes to the truth (Acts 9:1-9).
2. JESUS IS THE ONE WHO OPENS BLIND EYES
The miracle of the blind man shows that Christ alone has the power to bring light and understanding.
a. Christ as the Light of the World (John 8:12)
Jesus declared that whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.
b. Divine Power to Restore Sight (Psalm 146:8)
The Lord opens the eyes of the blind and lifts those who are bowed down.
c. Spiritual Enlightenment Through Christ (Ephesians 1:17-18)
God gives believers the spirit of wisdom and revelation so the eyes of their understanding may be enlightened.
d. Christ Leads People Out of Darkness (Isaiah 42:16)
God promises to lead the blind by a way they do not know and turn darkness into light.
Biblical Example:
Blind Bartimaeus received his sight when he cried out to Jesus in faith, and Christ immediately restored his vision (Mark 10:46-52).
3. A TRUE ENCOUNTER WITH CHRIST PRODUCES A TESTIMONY
The healed man boldly testified about what Jesus had done for him.
a. Personal Experience Cannot Be Denied (John 9:25)
The man could not explain everything, but he knew his life had changed.
b. Testimony Strengthens Faith (Revelation 12:11)
Believers overcome through the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony.
c. Boldness in Witnessing (Acts 4:20)
Like the apostles, believers must speak about what they have seen and experienced.
d. Transformation Becomes Visible (2 Corinthians 5:17)
When someone encounters Christ, old things pass away and new things begin.
Biblical Example:
The woman who met Jesus at the well immediately testified to her community about Christ, leading many people to believe in Him (John 4:28-30).
4. SPIRITUAL SIGHT LEADS TO FAITH AND WORSHIP
The story ends with the healed man recognising Jesus as the Son of God and worshipping Him.
a. Recognition of Christ’s Identity (John 9:35-36)
Jesus revealed Himself to the healed man as the Son of God.
b. Faith Leads to Worship (John 9:38)
After understanding who Jesus was, the man believed and worshipped Him.
c. Spiritual Sight Brings Transformation (2 Corinthians 3:18)
As believers behold the glory of the Lord, they are transformed into His image.
d. Walking in the Light (1 John 1:7)
Those who walk in the light experience fellowship with God and cleansing from sin.
Biblical Example:
When Isaiah saw the glory of God in the temple, the revelation led him to repentance, surrender, and a willingness to serve God (Isaiah 6:1-8).
CONCLUSION
The declaration “I was blind, now I see” is a powerful testimony of transformation. It reminds believers that an encounter with Christ changes everything. The man who was once blind became a living witness to the power of Jesus.
Every believer should have a similar testimony of transformation. Christ opens spiritual eyes, brings understanding, and leads people out of darkness into His marvellous light. When Jesus touches a life, blindness gives way to sight, confusion gives way to clarity, and darkness gives way to light.
