INTRODUCTION
In John chapter ten, Jesus used the illustration of a shepherd and his sheep to describe His relationship with His followers. In the midst of this teaching, He made a powerful declaration: “I am the door.” In ancient sheepfolds, the shepherd often lay across the entrance to protect the sheep, becoming the living gate through which the sheep entered and exited.
By describing Himself as the door, Jesus was declaring that He is the only legitimate access point to God’s kingdom. Just as sheep must pass through the gate to enter the fold safely, people must come through Christ to experience salvation and spiritual security.
In a world filled with many voices, philosophies, and religious claims, this declaration reminds believers that Jesus alone provides the way to eternal life. Through Him, people receive salvation, protection from spiritual danger, and the abundant life that God has promised.
1. JESUS IS THE ONLY DOOR TO SALVATION
Christ clearly taught that salvation is found exclusively through Him.
a. The Only Way to God (Acts 4:12)
The apostles boldly declared that there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
b. The Narrow Gate to Life (Matthew 7:13-14)
Jesus described the path to life as narrow, emphasising that few find it because many pursue other ways.
c. Access to the Father Through Christ (John 14:6)
Jesus affirmed that He is the way, the truth, and the life, and no one comes to the Father except through Him.
d. The Door of Righteousness (Psalm 118:20)
The Psalmist spoke of the gate of the Lord through which the righteous enter.
Biblical Example:
When Noah built the ark, God Himself shut the door after the righteous entered, symbolising divine protection and the exclusivity of God’s provision for salvation (Genesis 7:16).
2. ENTERING THROUGH CHRIST BRINGS SALVATION
Jesus promised that those who enter through Him will experience salvation.
a. Salvation Through Faith (Romans 10:9)
Those who confess Jesus as Lord and believe in their hearts receive salvation.
b. Forgiveness of Sin (Ephesians 1:7)
Through Christ’s sacrifice, believers receive redemption and the forgiveness of sins.
c. Deliverance from Condemnation (Romans 8:1)
Those who are in Christ Jesus are no longer under condemnation.
d. Adoption into God’s Family (John 1:12)
Those who receive Christ are given the authority to become children of God.
Biblical Example:
The Philippian jailer asked Paul and Silas what he must do to be saved, and they responded that he must believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, leading to his salvation and that of his household (Acts 16:30-34).
3. CHRIST THE DOOR PROVIDES PROTECTION
The shepherd used the gate to guard the sheep from predators, illustrating the protective role of Christ.
a. Protection from Spiritual Enemies (John 10:10)
Jesus warned that the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but He protects His sheep.
b. Security in God’s Presence (Psalm 121:7-8)
The Lord promises to keep His people from all harm and to watch over their lives.
c. Safety Under Divine Authority (2 Thessalonians 3:3)
The Lord is faithful and will strengthen and guard believers from evil.
d. Refuge in Christ (Proverbs 18:10)
The name of the Lord is a strong tower where the righteous find safety.
Biblical Example:
During the Passover, the Israelites applied the blood of the lamb to their doorposts, and the destroying angel passed over their homes, demonstrating divine protection (Exodus 12:7,13).
4. CHRIST THE DOOR LEADS TO ABUNDANT LIFE
Jesus not only provides access to salvation but also promises a life filled with divine provision and purpose.
a. Abundant Life in Christ (John 10:10)
Jesus declared that He came so that believers might have life and have it more abundantly.
b. Spiritual Nourishment (Psalm 23:1-2)
Like a shepherd leading sheep to green pastures, Christ provides for the needs of His people.
c. Freedom in Christ (2 Corinthians 3:17)
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
d. Continual Guidance (Isaiah 30:21)
God promises to guide His people in the way they should walk.
Biblical Example:
The prodigal son found restoration and abundant provision when he returned to his father’s house, illustrating the blessings that come from returning to the right door (Luke 15:20-24).
CONCLUSION
Jesus’ declaration, “I am the door,” reminds believers that He is the only access point to salvation and eternal life. Through Him, people enter into a relationship with God and receive forgiveness, protection, and spiritual security.
Those who come through Christ experience a life transformed by grace and guided by divine purpose. Believers must therefore trust in Christ alone, remain within His fold, and lead others to the door that brings eternal life.
